Omschrijving
- als voorbeeld van een historiserende neorenaissance aanleg uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw passend bij de reconstructie van het middeleeuwse kasteel;
- vanwege de opgegraven middeleeuwse grachtenstructuur;
- als entourage voor de collectie tuinsieraden en hekken;

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. As part of the reconstruction of the castle complex Sypesteyn, the founder Jhr. C.H.C.A. van Sypesteyn (author of 'Oud Nederlandse Tuinkunst', 1910) had soil research carried out on the grounds in the early 20th century, during which foundations of walls, bridges and the course of the moats were excavated. Based on this excavated site layout, Van Sypesteyn laid out a garden between 1907 and 1927 in which the Renaissance garden from c.1600 served as an example. Various collections brought together by Van Sypesteyn were integrated within the layout, such as a collection of exotic trees and shrubs in the immediate vicinity of the house and a collection of 17th and 18th-century garden ornaments and fences. The grounds near the house are divided into rectangular compartments with the structure determined by moats and box hedges. The hedges give the compartments an enclosed character. Each compartment represents a different part of the layout, such as an orchard, ornamental garden, maze (1901) and goose-foot of hornbeam and golf course. Adjacent, slightly further from the house, lies an elongated plot with the park woodland. From the forecourt on the Nieuw Loosdrechtsedijk, consisting of grass areas within a rectangular path system along which are utility trees, a north-south axis runs across a canal to the castle island. An eye-catcher on the canal is a 17th-century clipped yew (hen coop). At the end of the canal lies a small dog cemetery. The castle island, with the castle and the castle garden, forms the core of the layout. The castle garden was laid out between 1905-1906 as a rose garden according to Van Sypesteyn's design with a geometric pattern of box hedges and clipped box trees. Perpendicular to the castle island stands the Lindelaan, which leads through the park woodland to the fields beyond. At right angles to this stand two transverse lanes, which divide the wooded plot into four equal rectangles. From the most westerly transverse or sight-line is a vista across the fields, with the perspective emphasised by the bedstead hedge. South of the central wooded strip lies another strip of woodland with a single lane, and the aforementioned maze and goose-foot.
Valuation
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Sypesteyn is of general importance:
- as an example of a historicising neo-renaissance layout from the early 20th century fitting in with the reconstruction of the medieval castle;
- because of the excavated medieval moat structure;
- as a setting for the collection of garden ornaments and fences;
- because of the functional-spatial cohesion with the other components of the country estate.
