Omschrijving
HOOFDGEBOUW (Slot Zuylen).
Waardering
HOOFDGEBOUW (Slot Zuylen) is van algemeen belang:
- als representatief voorbeeld van een in oorsprong middeleeuws kasteel dat in de 16de eeuw opnieuw is opgetrokken en in het midden van de 18de eeuw is verfraaid door Jacob Marot, doch zijn karakter als ridderhofstad behouden heeft;
- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde 16de-eeuwse ruimte-indeling van het interieur en de 18de-eeuwse ingangspartij van Jacob Marot;
- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde aankleding van het interieur met elementen uit verschillende tijdsperioden;
- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description
Description
MAIN BUILDING (Slot Zuylen). The originally medieval moated castle was rebuilt in the first quarter of the 16th century and between 1751-1752 according to a design by Jacob Marot, whilst retaining its castle-like character, enlarged with a wing on the southwest side resulting in the U-shaped ground plan around the rectangular forecourt; in the facades are still a number of gun loops with the original cross-beams for harquebuses. The current front facade (southeast) in classical style was realised during the 1751-1752 renovation, as was the installation of sash windows and the application of surrounding drip mouldings. The building, constructed in brick, consists of two storeys and a basement beneath a hipped roof covered with slate tiles. The corners are provided with octagonal turrets, three of which are crowned by a spire and one, on the west corner, crowned by a bell-shaped roof with a pinacle. The turrets have narrow window openings. All facades have a fairly regular arrangement of multi-pane windows, multi-pane or latticed basement windows and roof dormers with small gabled roofs. The symmetrically arranged, five-bay front facade has in the projecting central axis an entrance door set in a simple stone frame bearing the date '1752'. The two projecting side wings have one window axis on the forecourt side and the front of the side wings likewise contains one window axis closed by a multi-pane roof dormer. The seven-bay rear facade (northwest) has on the left side a rectangular extension four bays wide with central projection beneath a slate-covered hipped roof ending in a brick chimney. Adjoining the southwest facade is a terrace-like brick extension along which runs a simple iron balustrade and a small staircase to the water. In the INTERIOR the 16th-century spatial arrangement is well preserved. The furnishings date from various centuries, including notably the 18th-century kitchen fittings with a 17th-century bread cupboard; the 18th-century silk wall covering in the blue room (applied around 1950 from the attic of Zuylen); the 'tea room' with 17th-century ceiling painting of cupids signed 'J. Muller 1669'; the hall with wall tapestries (around 1670) by Maximiliaan van Gught from Delft and the 18th-century finishing of chimneypieces, wainscoting and ceilings in Louis XV style according to a design by Jacob Marot; the so-called 'painted little room' with ceiling paintings (representations from the story of Phaedo) from the second half of the 17th century; dining room with a series of ancestral portraits from around 1670, which are integrated into the panelling.
Valuation

- on account of the well-preserved 16th-century spatial arrangement of the interior and the 18th-century entrance section by Jacob Marot;
- on account of the well-preserved furnishings of the interior with elements from various periods;
- on account of its characteristic location within the garden and park layout;
- on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
