HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Marquette. Formally structured park layout from the 18th century, preserved in structure, which was realized according to the design of the then owner Rendorp (floor plans 1751 and c.1760) and was somewhat landscaped around 1800 (situation drawing F.J. Nautz 1815). The main elements of the formal layout are formed by the double-moated terrain (park and castle terrain), the approach road which does not stand entirely at right angles to it and the remnants of the star wood. Approach road. Access to the country estate is obtained through a monumental approach road with double avenue planting (partly new planting); to the left of it lies a strip of woodland originally with a winding path (see Topographical Military Map 1892) and to the right of it successively a rectangular meadow surrounded by ditches and a square plot with the remnants of a layout by Copijn from c.1900 (lime trees, water feature, several copper beeches). From the avenue a particularly fine alternation between meadow, copses, ditches and solitary trees. The approach road crosses a transverse road parallel to the outer moat before the outer moat—running parallel to the outer moat—over the entire length of the terrain. Between the outer and inner moat in the axis of the approach road originally lay a roundabout (crossing), now some old trees; upon entering the forecourt a vista was left in the extension of the avenue (see 18th and 19th century maps); this vista is now shifted more to the west (so that from the Ballroom in the house a view has been obtained). Forecastle a round bricked wellhead, and a drinking water well covered by a barrel vault. Outer park. The park is situated within tree avenues that follow the line of the rectangular outer moat; the terrain to the west of the house had in the formal period an infill with parterres, axes, bosquets and a water feature; around 1800 the northern moat was dug over in landscape style with an islet—the water feature remained—and the terrain was partly planted with woodland and laid out as meadow with some solitary trees (now new planting). In the south-eastern corner against the outer moat was situated the vegetable garden (now meadow and car park). Around the outer moat, mainly on the west and north side is a park-like layout with a circular walk. Star wood. This last component lies on the opposite side of Marquettelaan and as such is no longer easily recognizable, only Marquettelaan and Oosterweg still follow a clear line of the originally five-avenue-formed star (laid out c.1750).
