Inleiding
In 1851 waren hier reeds 30 mensen werkzaam.

Description
Introduction
This former MANUFACTURER'S VILLA with GARDEN GATE and SHED is situated on the Stationsstraat next to the railway line Arnhem - Zutphen laid out between 1862 and 1865. The building was constructed around 1830 and then consisted of one storey. The second storey must have been added around 1858-1860 when the building received a new occupant in the person of the brick maker and tanner Hendrikus Avelingh. The Avelingh brothers belonged to the first industrialists in the municipality of Rheden and had owned a brick factory since circa 1841. In 1851 already 30 people were employed here. In later years the building was occupied among others by the brick maker Terwindt. The building has a forecourt on the front side with a cast-iron railing gate with revolving parts at the street. On the rear side of the building there is a deep back garden, bordering the gardens of the buildings also built on behalf of the Avelingh family in these years at Hendrikus Avelinghstraat 1 and 3. In the garden there is a small orchard. To the left of the house next to the railway line there are some old trees (beech, ash, chestnut and oak). Probably around 1900 the house was extended on the rear side, two greenhouses were added and the building received a higher roof with a substantial roof dormer on the front side. The special interior of the building containing a large number of remarkable tiled floors and tiled wainscotting from the period 1880-1920 has been well preserved. Behind the building there is still a shed, which probably dates from the time of construction, but possibly is older in origin and forms a remnant of a farmhouse.
Description
The building in its current form has a rectangular floor plan which indents twice on the side of the right gable wall and has two storeys. It is provided with a low white decorative plaster. The originally single-storey building was provided with a floor around 1860 and around 1890 with some greenhouses and extensions on the rear side. The building is terminated at the top with a hipped roof, covered with smoked Friesian tiles. On the rear roof slopes there are two chimneys. Below the encircling cornice there is a block-tooth moulding, a flat plastered frieze and an architrave moulding. The front roof slope has on either side of the raised central risalit provided with a roof dormer an oculus with decorative frame. On the extended roof section on the rear side there is a large roof dormer. Below the kitchen there is a cellar.
The FRONT FACADE has a symmetrical arrangement with three bays. The central axis is risalited and raised with a richly worked roof dormer with two narrow round-arched windows with stucco frame. Between both windows there is a pilaster. The roof dormer has a gabled roof and richly worked wind vane and brace. The front facade and the risalit are bounded by pilasters over two storeys in which recessed fields and circular motifs. The front and left gable walls are provided on the storey division with a profiled cordon moulding. In the central risalit there is on the ground floor an entrance portal provided with a stucco frame with a double panel door in which wrought-iron grilles. The doors are further provided with panels on the lower side and pediments with semi-circular fanlights on the upper side. Above the doors a fixed profiled calf and a fanlight with leaded glass infill. Above this there is a non-original canopy of synthetic material and iron with a balustrade-like crown. On either side of the front doors there is on both storeys a 4-pane window with rounded upper corners and blinds of which the lower parts are removable. In the left axis the windows are executed as sash windows, in the right axis as sliding windows. The storey window in the central risalit is likewise a 4-pane sliding window, however without blinds and with a profiled stucco frame. The window has a decorative wooden screen on the upper side. All windows have wooden window sills on the lower side and a profiled horizontal moulding on the upper side.
The broad LEFT GABLE WALL has on the left a large wooden greenhouse with arched windows and 8- and 10-pane fanlights in yellow cathedral glass. The greenhouse has a flat roof and a wooden balustrade. To the right of the greenhouse there are two 4-pane sash windows as on the front facade, with between them a blind recessed field. On the storey above the greenhouse there is a 4-pane sliding window and a sliding door with 2-pane fanlight. To the right of this two 4-pane sash windows and a blind facade field. Here too all windows have blinds.
The REAR FACADE has on the right a broad risalit which must have been added around 1890. The risalit has a greenhouse which is almost identical to that on the left gable wall. The greenhouse has no balcony. A double sliding door with panels on the lower side opens onto the garden. Above the greenhouse on the storey there is a new sash window. The rear roof slope contains a roof dormer with a gabled roof and an arched T-shaped sliding window. To the left of the greenhouse a narrow two-storey lavatory extension with flat roof has been added in which there are two narrow windows. To the left of this the facade recesses. The rear facade of the main block contains an 8-pane window with wooden shutters. Part of the window is sliding, the upper part is executed as a hopper window. Above this window there is a balcony with a balustrade of cast-iron grapevine scrolls and a 6-pane sliding window. In the gable wall of the extension adjoining on this facade there are a door with 2-pane fanlight and an adjacent 6-pane fixed window. The storey has the same arrangement.
The RIGHT GABLE WALL of the original section is blind. On the right the facade recesses at the location of the later extension and contains on the storey a round-arched staircase window with leaded glass infill. Below it a small extension with lean-to roof, Tuile du Nord tiles, a new door and a 4-pane window. To the right of this extension an 8-pane window with shutters as on the rear facade and a 6-pane sliding window on the storey. The building is cellared on this side.
The special INTERIOR has 18 rooms and has been preserved almost intact. It dates mainly from the years 1880-1920, when the building underwent various alterations. In the hall, the staircase and the kitchen there are completely intact tile walls and floors in very different motifs. The hall is provided with various types of so-called 'encaustic tiles' or figured cement tiles. These tiles are possibly from the English firm 'Minton & co', but are possibly also from Dutch or Belgian followers of the tiles developed by this company. The tiles are provided with motifs from the Neo-Gothic. The tile decoration in the staircase running parallel to the stair rail would have been applied on site by the artist Labouchère, who among others designed for De Porceleyne Fles in Delft. Tiles with the same motif are also found in the hall as wainscotting. The tiles form a fine example of Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch variant of Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. Also striking are the faience tile walls executed in a sort of Art Deco style in the draught lobby and the kitchen completely tiled with simple Delft blue tones. The kitchen also still has original cupboards and a pump. In the interior there are furthermore among others two original wooden draught lobbies with windows and fanlights in etched glass with Art Nouveau motifs, a staircase executed in Neo-Renaissance style with wrought-iron balusters, tiled walls, cast-iron radiators with floral motifs, wooden floors, stucco ceilings, panel doors and fireplaces, wrought ironwork, etc. On the storey and loft there are original wallpaper remnants with floral motifs.
In the back garden of the house there is an elongated single-storey SHED. It is laid in cross bond and has a raised section. It is covered with a height-stepped gabled roof with smoked Dutch tiles. The left section was used as a coach house and has a boarded gable top on the short side and wooden doors. The short gable on the Stationsweg side has a renewed wooden garage door. The long garden side has a semi-circular stable window, an arched door, an arched 6-pane stable window and a small rectangular window.
The plot is separated from the street by a cast-iron railing gate with revolving parts.
Valuation
VILLA in eclectic style with GARDEN GATE and SHED.
Architectural-historical values:
- The villa is of importance on account of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, the well-preserved main form, the detailing and the special material use such as the various tiled walls and floors in the interior.
- The villa forms an example of a historically grown building which in its current form is a good example of the style of Eclecticism from the third quarter of the nineteenth century with some later additions.
- The villa possesses an almost completely intact and rare interior. The building possesses one of the richest and best preserved interiors in the municipality of Rheden from the years 1850-1940, whereby the special aspect lies especially in the presence of considerable numbers of tiled floors and walls designed in different styles and different colours.
Urban design values:
- The villa is of importance as part of villa development on the Stationsstraat in Velp. As such there is a matter of ensemble value which is further strengthened by the villa development in the opposite Kastanjelaan and Kerkstraat. The villa also has an ensemble value with the villas also built for members of the Avelingh family at H. Avelinghstraat 1 and 3. On account of the location in the sight line of the Kerkstraat and the Stationsplein as well as the location at the railway level crossing there is also a matter of siting value. The building is of special significance for the appearance of the village of Velp.
Cultural-historical values:
- This former manufacturer's villa is of importance as a recognisable element from a social development. The villa remodelled on behalf of the Avelingh family forms a good example of the housing of this new wealthy elite which preferred to establish itself in substantial villas outside the city in an environment with much natural beauty. Good connections with the city, such as in this case Arnhem, and the west of the country were however a requirement. This new population group contributed to the fact that the appearance of the village of Velp as well as the social stratification of the population changed greatly.
