Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Double VILLA on the Arnhemsestraatweg. The two properties were built together around 1885 in a particularly rich Eclectic style in which, among other things, Louis XV characteristics are recognisable in the stucco decorations. No. 37 has the entrance in the side facade, no. 39 in the front facade. All facades of the properties are whitewashed and richly detailed (no. 39 has a modern rough plaster layer, no. 39 is finished smooth). Around the double property there is a large garden with, among other things, maples and acacias. The double property is one of the most richly detailed properties executed in Eclectic style in the municipality of Rheden. The double property has been preserved in fairly good condition. Alterations mainly concern the roof covering and various disappeared balustrades of balconies or verandas.
Description
Both villas have a rectangular floor plan and consist of a basement, a piano nobile, one storey and an attic storey. Because the terrain is sloping, the basement is more above ground at the side and rear facades than on the front side where it is not visible. Both properties individually have a truncated hipped roof, which at no. 39 is covered with asphalt slates and at no. 37 with concrete tiles. No. 37 has a lower section at the rear with a gabled roof. Various chimneys are situated on both roofs. The facades are terminated at the top with a main cornice with architrave moulding, flat frieze and a profiled, corniced cornice, which at no. 37 is supported by consoles. The property Arnhemsestraatweg 37 projects forward in relation to no. 39. The facades are richly detailed with pilasters which on the ground floor are provided with diamond tooling and on the storey with fluting. The pilasters have applied horizontal bands and are terminated at the top with capitals. The windows and balcony doors have profiled stucco mouldings, which at no. 37 are executed somewhat more elaborately. Stucco decorations are applied above the windows in the form of, among others, human heads and festoons.
Arnhemsestraatweg 37
The FRONT FACADE has two window bays. The left bay is provided on the ground floor with a dais, framed with a finely worked wooden balustrade. The rectangular window openings are provided on the storey with T-sash windows. The ground floor has on the left a sliding door and on the right a 2-pane sash window. The windows have venetian blinds. Corner pilasters as mentioned bound the facade. On both the first and second storeys, at the height of the sill and head beams of the windows, plastered bands are applied. The storey division is formed by a heavily profiled and continuous belt moulding which shifts at the height of the windows and shows a bend, so that a pediment-like form is created. The belt moulding is supported at the height of the windows by consoles. In the pentagonal field between windows and belt moulding human heads and festoons are applied. The windows on the storey are terminated at the top with a cornice on consoles with a festoon underneath. Above the small cornices are cartouche-like stucco decorations applied between consoles which support the cornice. The windows in both storeys have continuous sill mouldings. Underneath are applied panels with bracket-shaped undersides. In the roof plane, between both storey windows, a lavishly decorated dormer window is placed, provided with a round-arched window opening with tilting sash, fixed transom and round-arched fanlight. The window has a surround with diamond tooling and has on either side a fluted half-column with capital. The dormer window has a corniced cornice, resting on consoles. The flat roof plane carries a wooden element, consisting of a pediment with underneath two pilasters, scroll pieces and applied panels.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE is, as far as pilasters and window surrounds are concerned, decorated in the same manner as the front facade. The right window bay has on the ground floor and on the storey a T-sash window with venetian blinds. To the left of this is located an entrance pavilion with applied horizontal bands and corner blocks. The rectangular entrance portal is crowned at the top with a pediment and stuccowork. The entrance section consists of a double panelled door with cast iron door grilles, pediments and a fanlight. A number of steps are located in front of the entrance. The balustrade of the staircase is not original. Above the porch a T-sash window with venetian blinds, above that a pair of coupled round-arched windows. The pavilion breaks through the cornice and is crowned with a very steeply angled hipped roof with ridge tile and asphalt slates. To the left of the pavilion the facade steps back and becomes lower. The rear facade of the main block contains on this side some blind framed fields and a segmental and barred basement window. At the height of the entrance is a round-arched window. The lower facade section contains some segmental barred basement windows and a brick staircase to the basement. Above this a wooden staircase leads to the kitchen door. To the right of this door are two small segmental windows. To the left of the staircase is a segmental and barred basement window with above it a 2-pane sash window with venetian blinds.
The REAR FACADE contains an elevated conservatory, applied around 1915, with sliding doors and segmental windows with carved mullions between them. The conservatory has at the top a carved wooden moulding and a flat roof, forming a balcony for the storey. The balcony has a simple wooden balustrade. The sliding balcony door is located in a wide frame with side lights and fanlights and has venetian blinds. The bent roof edge also has a carved moulding. The conservatory is accessible from the garden via a number of steps.
Arnhemsestraatweg 39
This FRONT FACADE has two bays and steps back slightly in relation to no. 37. The double panelled door, provided with iron grilles with flower motifs, is identical to that of the adjacent property and executed with wooden panels on the lower side and pediments on the upper side. The fanlight has a copper hexagonal lantern. In front of the entrance portal are three angled-out hardstone steps with cast iron fence posts. The balustrade has disappeared. Above the front door is a broken pediment with within it a rectangular plastered panel with festoons, covered with a cornice. The decoration of this facade is somewhat simpler than that of the adjacent property. The belt mouldings are not so strongly accentuated, but here too stucco decorations are applied above the windows. The moulded human heads are, however, not on the ground floor, as at no. 37, but on the storey. On the right of the front facade and on the right and left (in the wall plane of no. 37) are pilasters as mentioned. The storey has on the left a tilting sash and on the right a higher double balcony door with balcony railing. The sliding door to the right of the front door has a fanlight and a semicircular dais, of which the balustrade is missing. In the roof plane is an oeil de boeuf.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has a central pavilion which extends to the attic storey and is provided with a gabled roof and a profiled roof moulding. The pavilion is bounded on either side by pilasters as mentioned. On the attic storey are two tilting sashes in one wooden frame with pilaster-form mullions and a small cornice. The windows have iron window grilles. The frame is located in a segmental wall field. Underneath are two double doors in a segmental arch surround. The doors open onto the flat roof of a non-original veranda with balustrade. The basis of the veranda is formed by the extended section of the basement in which is located a non-original window. To the left of the veranda is a three-sided closed bay window with flat roof and three closed 2-pane sash windows with profile moulding placed. The tilting sash with fanlight above it has a surrounding decoration as mentioned at the front facade. To the right of the pavilion are some newly cut windows of various sizes. A staircase leads to the segmental non-original access door to the basement. To the right of this is a recessed and non-original wall section with a segmental basement window with tilting sash and above each other a closed sash window and a tilting sash with a profile moulding. In the roof plane are two non-original dormers and a chimney.
The REAR FACADE suffered war damage and has been renewed. The facade has two tilting sashes with transom, a double balcony door with transoms and two rectangular basement windows. In the roof plane is a non-original dormer window.
Both Arnhemsestraatweg 37 and no. 39 still contain original INTERIOR components such as marble fireplaces and floors, profiled frames and draught lobbies with stained glass. In several rooms there are still fine stucco ceilings and wooden wall linings. Particularly fine are the draught lobby frames, of which the windows are provided with rounded corners.
