The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The neo-gothic GRAVE MONUMENT of F.J. HALLO, unique for the municipality of Rheden, is located on the Reformed Churchyard in Velp. This churchyard is located near the old town centre of Velp on the north side of the Reinaldstraat. The grounds are surrounded on three sides by the back gardens, planted among others with beeches and oaks, of monumental villas and residential houses from the second half of the 19th century located on the Kerkstraat, Kastanjelaan and Gasthuislaan. Until 1833 the Reformed believers were buried in and around the Oude Jan on the Kerkstraat. In 1829 it was forbidden to bury inside the church, and it was also stipulated that the new churchyards had to be at least "30 to 40 ells" from the built-up area. The new churchyard on the Reinaldstraat was probably laid out in 1834. According to the cadastral plan of 1832, the land on which the churchyard is located was still in use as arable land in that year. In the church accounts of 1834 various items for the installation appear. The churchyard has a simple symmetrical layout with a central axis and circular centre formed by the family vault of the van Spaen van Hardenbroek family (national monument, nr. 42150), around which the most special graves are located. The planting consists predominantly of conifers. The chapel-like grave monument was built in 1876 on the orders of the gas magnate F.J. Hallo and is stylistically related to the fairy-tale castle 'Batouwe Zate' in the lower town of Nijmegen built on his orders. This unique building for the Netherlands, a gigantic neo-gothic construction, was built from 1859 onwards and would be demolished shortly after the Second World War. The architect of the grave monument is for now unknown. Given the similarities, both buildings will be by the same person.

Description:

The plastered structure is erected on an approximately rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof provided with a zinc roof covering which may not be original. On the four corners are diagonally placed pinnacles. Each pinnacle consists of a shaft with on three sides a casement with trefoil ornament. Each pinnacle possesses a hardstone spire with crockets and cube-shaped finials. The front and rear facades have pilaster strips which continue in the spout gable in the form of a climbing round-arch frieze. The original crowning of the facades has unfortunately disappeared. What this looked like is not yet known. Perhaps there were also pinnacles here. The front facade has a pointed-arch entrance door. The likewise pointed-arch wooden door is provided with two cross hinges with fine neo-gothic decorations with leaf motifs. The lock surrounded by a double pointed arch is likewise provided with decorations.
