Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
North of casemate 422 stands on the western bank of the Defence Canal the S (3a) CASEMATE 423, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment is still entirely present in this location and still has mostly the original profile.
Description
The casemate stands at the place where a forest path from the Sint Anthonis Forest Station terminates at the canal. The casemate gives frontal fire on this path and flanking fire on the forward area. The casemate has been well preserved but shows damage on the rear side from the impact of a shell. It is unlikely that this damage was caused on 10 or 11 May 1940. Behind the casemate there are still clear ground traces of the trench to the entrance of the casemate visible in the embankment. Furthermore, the earthen embankment on the southern side of the casemate has partly disappeared, making visible the underlying moisture-resistant coating of the concrete.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction historical importance because of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the use of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble values as an essential part of a larger whole, which is of cultural historical importance and is of importance because of the high-quality character of the development and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. The whole has great aesthetic value and is as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history rare.
