Inleiding

Introduction

On the southern side of the Koestraat stands, with its building line directly on the street, the DWELLING HOUSE with TASTING ROOM and former BREWERY of De Kroon's Bierbrouwerij De Kroon. The building, in craftsman-traditional style, possibly dates in its core from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but in its present form is primarily a product of the nineteenth century. Around 1950 the business was considerably expanded. The remaining, post-war business buildings fall outside the national monument protection.

Description

The one-and-a-half-storey, sub-cellar building consists of a double plot set at right angles to the road with a rectangular floor plan, gabled roofs and a box gutter. The roof is covered with old Dutch tiles. The left part of the building is partly in use as a dwelling house, the right part as a guest room and tasting room. The rear section is the former brewery. The front facade is plastered in block bond and has two spout gables, with five window bays on the ground floor. A centrally clamped door with fanlight, flanked by twice two six-pane sash windows with clamped shutters. The fanlights of the windows have leaded glass panels, with crowned, stylised floral motifs. In the spout gables one four-pane sash window is placed each. The hand-moulded brick side facades are whitewashed and have a plastered plinth. Here one can clearly read the original purpose of the building. On the western side, at first-floor level, is a series of five segmental arch openings, which, like the heavy wall anchors in both side facades, indicate the presence of an old malt floor. In the left side of the southern side facade a clamped door with divided fanlight leads to the tasting room. Next to the door a series of six-pane sash windows. In the eastern side facade from right to left sit three six-pane sash windows of the dwelling house (former cellar room, windows lowered in the nineteenth century), two lower-positioned six-pane sash windows and a composite window from around 1920. The business extension is sub-cellar and also has openings to the attic storey in this facade. In the interior, among other things, the mother and child bint ceiling, the tiled hearth and the corner cupboard in the tasting room and the oak, neo-Renaissance style executed hearth in the dwelling house are of importance.

Valuation

The brewery is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry and as an example of the typological development of brewery buildings. It is of architectural-historical importance because of its sober ornamentation and as an example of the, among smaller breweries not unusual, but meanwhile extremely rare combination of dwelling house, tasting room and brewery. The building is also of importance because of the intactness of its exterior and interior. As a small village brewery it is extremely rare because of the combination of related functions of residence, tasting room and brewery.
