Inleiding

Introduction

R.C. CHURCH of St. Andrew and Anthony of Padua. Built in 1934 in a traditional style with neogothic elements according to a design by M. van Beek. The church is set back from the building line and is connected to the rectory by a corridor.

Description

Brick cruciform church under a combined gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The nave has narrow side aisles under lean-to roof, adjoining the gabled roof but with less steep pitch. The side aisles are supported by two buttresses, one cut once, with natural stone cappings and have portals under lean-to roof at the front. Against the front facade a portal is placed that is preceded by a platform and staircase. In this is located the door in a brick pointed-arch frame on a natural stone base. Above it is a pointed-arch fanlight with brick fork tracery, filled with stained-glass. Slightly projecting transept with three-part windows with fork tracery. Lower, three-sided closed choir. In the corners between nave and transept on the choir side of the church small chapels.

The church has pointed-arch windows, filled with stained-glass. The crossing is crowned by a small belfry with spire. Walls and vaults in the interior are executed in fair-faced brickwork. The walls of the choir are painted by Charles Eyck, in the choir representations of Saints Andrew, Lucia, Barbara and Anthony and the crucifixion of Christ from 1941. Also the stained-glass windows made between 1948 and 1950 in the transepts are by his hand. Furthermore Eyck made in 1957 some paintings on chamotte tile tableaux, representing the baptism of Jesus and Moses striking water from the rock, and in that same year carried out a painting of St. Adrian of Beek and St. Odulphus on the plastered walls of the baptistery. Baptismal font with metal pointed cover.

Above the entrance organ gallery with an organ front from 1897. The inventory includes a large number of elements from the old church such as the stations of the cross in neogothic frames and a large number of saint figures including some plaster figures and a mid-eighteenth-century Lucia figure with neogothic polychromy. Furthermore there stands in the church a neogothic Mary altar from around 1900 and a neogothic oak confession box, a marble high altar from circa 1935 and a wooden neogothic altar with a relief of the Lamb of God (1853).
