Inleiding

Rats in Traditionele stijl.

Introduction

The HOLY JOSEPH SCHOOL dates from 1938-'39 and was designed by A.J.M. Rats in Traditional style. The building stands on the western side of the grounds and consists of two wings. The originally mixed primary school is executed in a soberer style than church and rectory. Around 1970 the school underwent a first extension. Currently new wings have been added to the northern and western end gables of the original building. These do not, however, disturb the view from the Spoordonkseweg of the original layout of the complex (church, rectory and school).

Description

The school consists of two wings, at right angles to each other, under a hipped saddle roof with overhang on brackets and improved Dutch tiles. Where the wings meet, the western wing has an additional storey. The western wing has four classrooms on the ground floor, the northern two. The classrooms are located respectively on the southern and eastern sides of the wings in relation to the optimal admission of daylight. The windows have been renewed. The other side of the wings is taken up by a connecting corridor with a series of small rectangular lights. The most striking element is the two-storey corner section with a high, tapering chimney, on which an open metal weathervane representing a master before the schoolboard. On the floor above an extra classroom has been built here, which was originally intended as a sewing room.

The façades are constructed of brick, decorated with natural stone corner blocks. In the corner section is an empty round arch niche. Next to it is the entrance section with canopy on wall pillar-corbel construction.

In the interior, the hall with glazed tile cladding, finished with a border, and a terracotta tile depicting Mary with Child are of particular note.

Valuation

The school is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of catholicism in the south in the interbellum and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the traditionalist village school. It has architectural-historical importance through the style and the detailing which among other things refers to craft regional traditions. The building is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect Rats. It has ensemble values because of the particular location, connected with the development of the church village Spoordonk. It is of importance because of the architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
