Omschrijving
Complex Nieuwstraat 28 Oirschot
Inleiding
1931 / Solemn. ben. A.R.D. / H.C.M. Freyssen Dom. / S.S. Trinitatis".

Description
Complex Nieuwstraat 28 Oirschot
Introduction
The CONVENT CHAPEL of the R.K. convent of the Carmelite sisters at Oirschot is located on the southern side of the already protected sixteenth-century buildings. The oriented chapel is situated with the choir and the adjoining sacristy on the Nieuwstraat. The nave, a simple hall-like space, is incorporated into the southern convent wing from 1931: it forms the ground floor of this wing. Originally this structural component partly functioned as a chapter house. Around 1980 the southern side of the sacristy was partly enclosed by new construction.
Description The chapel consists of three parts: a hall-like, flat-ceilinged single-aisled nave that forms part of the ground floor of the southern convent wing; a two-storey straight-closed choir with attached porch, bordering the Nieuwstraat, and a single-storey sacristy with prayer room located to the south of the choir.
The choir is the most striking element of the chapel. In keeping with the tradition of Valk's oeuvre, the architecture of the chapel serves the doctrine of the 'Christocentric Crucifix Basilica'; although the building is not a parish church, it was accessible to the public, who could follow mass from the adjoining sixteenth-century section opened towards the chapel's southern side. Consequently, the building entirely in Valk's tradition has a particularly dominant centre of presence and place of offering, around which the faithful are seated on two sides. The altar is brought by the architect 'from the head to the heart' of both the faithful and the building. By also emphasizing the choir in height (the only part of the building with two storeys plus a gabled roof and the high-placed bells in the ridge turrets of the side facades), the altar is emphatically illuminated. The entire chapel is constructed in hand-formed brick and has herringbone patterns and a closing cornice of profiled stone. The gabled roofs are, as on the sixteenth-century section, covered with old Dutch tiles. The nave (the sisters' choir) is lit by four paired pointed-arch windows. Originally these were straight-closed windows. The sacristy and choir also have such pointed-arch windows. Here they are original: the sacristy is lit through the eastern facade by four pointed-arch windows with simple coloured stained glass, while the adjoining choir on this facade has two tall lancet windows with stained glass (including depictions of singing angels). The separation of priest's and sisters' choir is visible in the parquet floor.
On the northeastern side of the choir stands a small porch under a lean-to roof with old Dutch tiles. Via an arched doorway with wrought-iron gate one enters the porch (with granito flooring), where a limestone facade stone bears the text: "Domus Haec sor Carm.d. / Ao D. 1663 vi relicta / Fauste Reconstr. 1931 / Solemn. ben. A.R.D. / H.C.M. Freyssen Dom. / S.S. Trinitatis". In the white-painted interior of Valk's chapel, of particular importance is the open-worked roof truss on wall posts, and the triumphal arches between choir, nave and sixteenth-century section, partly with pointed-arch niches.
In the interior are notably the altar by W. Pompe and the stained glass windows by the company Tepe, Amsterdam (donated by the Smits family).
Valuation
The convent chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the re-establishment of older orders in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative cloister for mendicant orders in the Interbellum. It is of architectural-historical importance because of its extremely simple style expressing the ideal of poverty, and is also of importance as an example of the realization of Christocentrism in the work of architect Valk. It has ensemble values because of the coherence of cloister and chapel. It is also of importance in relation to the integrity of the surrounding environment.
