The register's description

Inleiding.

Vlakke plafonds.

Introduction.

R.C. CHURCH from 1925, dedicated to H. Antonius Abbot, designed by architect ir. F. Franssen. The church stands on the corner with the Heytmorgen. The Traditionalist architecture with Neo-Romanesque elements is also based on early Christian architecture.

Description.

The brick church which is three-aisled has a basilical plan, with the longitudinal axis of the floor plan dominating. The nave contains seven bays with round-arch arcades. The nave has a gabled roof, the side aisles have lean-to roofs. The choir has a semi-circular apse, which is closed in pentagonal form on the outside. On the west side on both sides of the nave two side chapels under gabled roofs. At the west front of the church an asymmetrically placed, square bell tower under a tent roof. The tower consists of three storeys with natural stone cordonlines and below the three round-arch belfry openings a clock. On the corner with Heytmorgen sits in the wall of the lowest storey of the tower a Sacred Heart figure. The church is built in brick in cross bond. The roofs are furnished with natural slate and partly with Tuile du Nord tiles.

The interior is entirely plastered with the exception of the basement.

Coupled round-arch windows and round-arch arcades. Flat ceilings. Coloured figurative stained glass in the round-arch windows. Against the pillars of the nave and against the triumphal arch between nave and apse attached half-cylindrical consoles respectively ten natural stone and two wooden saint figures. In the apse a ciborium on four pillars. At the rear of the church a baptism and Mary chapel.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the basilical church in the interwar period.

The building has architectural-historical importance through the style and detailing reaching back to the Romanesque. The building is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of the architect Franssen. It has ensemble values in connection with the adjacent rectory and associated cemetery on the opposite side of the Heytmorgen.
