Inleiding

Introduction

On the south side of the Sacred Heart Church at the Baronielaan stands the associated RECTORY, built in 1901 in Neo-Gothic style, according to a design by P.J. van Genk. The block-shaped building is connected by means of a passage falling within the protected area to the south side aisle of the church. Around 1930 a small roof dormer was built against the roof slope on the side of the Baronielaan. On the south side of the house a lane runs to the back ground area at the Mark. The property has a deep back garden, which is separated from the lane by a high brick garden wall with pilasters and a half-hip roof.

Description

The two-storey building has a roughly square floor plan and is covered by a hipped roof with slate-and-Maas roofing. The rectory is constructed in brick and sparsely ornamented with hard stone plinth, lintel bands, band course and a similar coping with pinacle on the gable end. Besides the above elements, the front and north side façades are divided horizontally by bands. The façades are finished by a moulded gutter cornice, with underlying ornamental frieze in brick. Above all round-arched windows, a double trefoil arch with crowning quatrefoil is set out in bas-relief in the arch panel.

The front façade has an asymmetrical arrangement and has five window axes, of which the middle one plus the one adjacent to the right are contained in a central risalit running the full height of the façade, crowned by a gable end with window and speckled courses. The façade to the left of the risalit lies slightly further back in the building line than that to the right. All windows are T-windows, of which the arrangement on the ground floor is somewhat simplified. The fanlights have ornamental stained glass infilling. In the south side façade of the risalit, both on ground floor and first floor, a half-window is placed.

The other façades also have an asymmetrical arrangement. The side façades are largely blind. The north side façade has on the ground floor one, on the upper storey two T-windows as in the front façade. The front door is placed in a recessed hall between rectory and church, consisting of a portico under a pointed arch, braced by brick masonry, with two natural stone columns. The portico is closed by a varying-height crenellated natural stone block course. The hall is accessed via a simple wrought front door under a semicircular fanlight.

The south side façade is largely blind, except for two basement lights, fitted with heavy anti-theft bars. In the rear façade, which has five window axes, has a roughly symmetrical arrangement with on the ground floor a pair of hinged doors and hinged T-windows, while on the upper storey T-sash windows are used.

Valuation

The rectory is of general interest. The object has cultural-historical value: it is of importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the diocese of Breda; the object has architectural-historical value: it is of importance in the work of the architect Van Genk; the object has ensemble value: it has significance as part of a larger whole, the church complex which is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban design importance because of the close relationship with the protected urban view surrounding the Baronielaan, to which it corresponds in scale, proportion and detailing; integrity/recognisability: the object is of importance in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment of which it forms a focal point.
