Inleiding
Mij Utrecht H. Wagemakers A.D. 1904".

Description
Introduction
CHURCH in Neo-Gothic style with tower and roof turret from 1903 by architect C.F. van Hoof from Tilburg.
Description
The cruciform church is basilical in construction and has slate gabled and lean-to roofs. The nave has three tall bays, one before the transept and one after the transept. The priest's choir, which is slightly lower than the nave, has two bays and a five-sided termination. The church, which is not orientated, lies with the priest's choir to the west and the entrance section to the east. The tower is flanked by the baptistry and Marian chapel. The low side aisles are partly provided with lean-to roofs and on either side of the transept arms with tent roofs. The church is built of purple-red hand-formed brick laid in English bond with yellow brick accents in pointed arches, horizontal bands and offsets. The square tower with three bell-ringing bells has buttresses and four storeys. In the first storey is located the main entrance with a lofty porch in which is incorporated an image of Saint Lawrence. The second contains two coupled pointed arch windows at the location of the singing loft. The third storey has three pointed arch niches and the fourth storey contains the sound openings under a weather-moulding and clock face. The pointed octagonal tower roof is flanked by four small octagonal corner turrets. In the church both coupled and uncoupled pointed arch windows, with figurative, coloured stained glass. In transept and tower also round windows. The figurative windows were placed between 1904 and 1924 to designs by Frans Frencken, who was a teacher at the Ypelaar minor seminary and executed in the workshops of Joep Nicolas (Roermond) and H. Wagemakers (Utrecht). One of the windows on the singing loft is signed as follows: "Stichtsche Glas v. Mij Utrecht H. Wagemakers A.D. 1904". The interior of the church has in choir, transept, crossing, nave and side aisles respectively: plastered ray, star and cross vaults. In the three portals of the church brick cross vaults. The walls of the church are plastered with accents of purple-red ashlar stones at corners, columns, arches and the like. Under pastor Vermunt (1919-58), from 1926 onwards the church was polychromed by artist Jan Dunselman (Amsterdam), who in 1904 had applied some tableaus in the choir. His brother Cornelis Dunselman undertook the simple decorative work. In the sixties, however, the polychrome wall surfaces between the purple-red ashlar stones were painted white. The paintings were Neo-Gothic in layout. Alongside Old Testament figures such as Archangel Michael, David, Moses, Aaron, Elias and preachers of faith such as Servatius, Bonifatius, Willibrordus and Lambert, Saint Christopher, there were along the walls a whole series of angel figures which were to embody the moral virtues or the eight beatitudes. For the baptistry, around 1930 the Brussels artist Watelet painted the portraits of three bishops who had been baptised in Ulvenhout: Mgr. Van Hooydonk, Mgr. Van Dijk (auxiliary bishop of Van Hooydonk) and Mgr. Leijten.
In the church are among other things an organ from 1803 made by Lambert Benoît van Penteghem (Ghent) and a wooden Saint Francis image from 1898. Between church and former Maria school on the Dorpstraat a revetment wall. In it are incorporated two natural stone gate piers crowned by a lion's head from the castle Grimhuysen.
Valuation
The church building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as an exemplification of the development of Catholicism, in particular the succession of shed churches and new churches, which is tangible here due to the incorporation of older components in the current complex. Furthermore, the building is architecturally valuable as a representative of the work of the architect C.F. van Hoof (Tilburg), active in North Brabant. The complex has ensemble value due to the coherence with the urban planning structure of the village centre.
It has remained substantially intact on the exterior.
