Inleiding

Introduction

The Hirdes Bridge over the Mark is located south of the city centre, between Marksingel and Generaal van de Plaatstraat. The construction of the BEAM BRIDGE was undertaken at the initiative of manufacturer L.A. Hirdes, who wished to improve the connection between his factory at the current Irenestraat and the city centre. On 25 November 1905 he received a building permit, on condition that the Mark would remain navigable at that location.

The bridge was built to a design by F.A. van Seegeren.

Since 1942 the bridge has borne the name Hirdesbrug. Recently the lamp posts, which had been missing for a long time, were replaced.

Description

The small beam bridge consists of two arched main beams of reinforced concrete, which, because the concrete floor plates are suspended by means of T-beam profiles under the beams, also serve as railings. These bridge railings flare out at the location of the abutments, whereby the bridge deck widens there.

The abutments have a concrete skeleton, filled with brick.

At the top there are on both sides two cast iron lamp posts with light fixtures. These lamps, provided with leaf ornament, were renewed according to the original model and are provided with the cast inscription "Lenzi".

Through a paving of clinkers, as well as by the boshing of the inside of the beams, an attempt was made during construction to enliven the material. On the outside the beams are provided with savings fields.

Around 1906 holly trees were planted beside the abutments. These form part of the original design.

It has cultural-historical values: it is of significance as a distinctive expression of the technical and typological development of bridge building and the application of reinforced concrete.
