Inleiding
RIJKS HOGERE BURGERSCHOOL uit 1867 in Eclectische stijl. De school ligt met de voorgevel aan de westkant van de oprijlaan van het kasteel Breda, met de lange rechterzijgevel aan de kasteelgracht en de lange linkerzijgevel aan de Singelstraat.
Sinds 1949 is de school in gebruik bij de Koninklijke Militaire Academie (aangeduid als gebouw K).
Omschrijving
SCHOOL, tweelaags onder schilddak met binnenplat, gedekt met grijze kruispannen. Het dak is bekroond door vier hoekschoorstenen. De school heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het exterieur is symmetrisch van opzet. Aan de oostkant heeft het gebouw een kelder met opkamer. De rijk bewerkte gevels zijn voorzien van bruut en gefrijnd schoonpleisterwerk afgewisseld door natuursteen voor basementplint, dorpels en cordonlijst en aan de bovenkant voorzien van een fries met kroonlijst gedragen door gebeeldhouwde voluutvormige consoles. In het pleisterwerk natuurstenen imitatiewerk voor basement, middenrisaliet en boven en opzij van de muuropeningen.
In de gevels segmentboogvormige muuropeningen met voor beide bouwlagen achtruits schuifvensters afgezet door geprofileerde stuclijsten met aan de bovenkant een kuifbekroning en in het basement gietijzeren roosters voor de keldervensters. De getoogde muuropeningen zijn aan de bovenkant geaccentueerd door een doorlopende geprofileerde stuclijst. In de penanten naast de vensters zowel op de begane grond als op de verdieping een ronde ventilatieopening met daarin gietijzeren roosters omzoomd door geprofileerde stuclijsten. Ter hoogte van de bovenkant van de vensters een doorlopende stuclijst, die de segmentbogen accentueert.
Voor- en achtergevel bestaan uit vijf traveeën met door een fronton bekroonde middenrisaliet en hoekpilasters. In de risaliet respectievelijk de vierpaneels dubbele voor- en achterdeur met in het bovenlicht een gietijzeren levensboom.
In het fronton een driehoekig venster met geometrische roedenverdeling. De zijgevels zijn acht traveeën breed. De buitenste traveeën zijn risalerend. Het interieur bevat een trap met bordes, kuipstukken en bewerkte trappaal met leuning, wrong en balusters. Gangvloer op begane grond van hardsteen. De kap met binnenplat wordt gedragen door zestien houten Philibertspanten met een verbinding van slotbouten.

Description
SCHOOL, two storeys under hipped roof with inner flat, covered with grey cross tiles. The roof is crowned by four corner chimneys. The school has a rectangular floor plan. The exterior is symmetrically arranged. On the east side the building has a basement with a room above. The richly worked facades are provided with rough and fined ashlar rendering alternated by natural stone for basement plinth, lintels and stringcourse and at the top provided with a frieze with cornice borne by sculptured volute-shaped consoles. In the rendering natural stone imitation work for basement, central risalit and above and beside the wall openings.
In the facades segment-arch-shaped wall openings with sash windows for both storeys set off by moulded stucco bands with a crested top and in the basement cast-iron grilles for the basement windows. The arched wall openings are accentuated at the top by a continuous moulded stucco band. In the pilasters beside the windows both on the ground floor and on the first floor a round ventilation opening with cast-iron grilles inside bordered by moulded stucco bands. At the height of the top of the windows a continuous stucco band which accentuates the segment arches.
Front and rear facades consist of five bays with a pediment-crowned central risalit and corner pilasters. In the risalit respectively the four-panel double front and rear door with in the fanlight a cast-iron tree of life.
In the pediment a triangular window with geometric glazing bars. The side facades are eight bays wide. The outer bays are projecting. The interior contains a staircase with landing, pendentive squinches and worked stair newel with railing, handrail and balusters. Floor in ground floor passage of hardstone. The roof truss with inner flat is carried by sixteen wooden Philibert trusses with a connection of lock bolts.
