Inleiding
WARENHUIS gebouwd in 1924 nu restaurant met bovenwoningen en kantoren. Ontwerp van architect C.M. van de Beld.
Het voormalige warenhuis ligt op een perceel grond dat ingesloten is door belendende bebouwing op de hoek van de Catharinastraat en Kasteelplein.
Het ligt binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht. De onderpui is na de Tweede Wereldoorlog gewijzigd.
Bij de bouw van het warenhuis moest de toren boven de hoofdingang hoger worden dan die van het warenhuis van Vroom & Dreesmann in de Karrestraat.
Omschrijving
Het pand heeft vijf bouwlagen waarvan de onderste de kelder is en de bovenste de zolderverdieping, onder twee loodrecht op elkaar staande zadeldaken gedekt met leien, tussen tuitgevels.
Boven de hoofdingang, op de ronde hoek een achthoekige toren onder koperen helmdak met bolbekroning. De gevels en goten van het pand aan plein en straatkant bestaan uit gefrijnde Bentheimer zandsteen met gebeeldhouwde reliëfs op een basement van diabaas. De achtergevels zijn opgetrokken uit paarsrode baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. De beide gevels aan de straat, respectievelijk twee en zes traveeën breed, zijn over de volle hoogte voorzien van lisenen. Elke travee bevat op de begane grond één groot etalageraam en op de verdiepingen twee tweedelige schuifvensters. De buitenste traveeën zijn één venster breed.
Reliëfs op de borstweringen tussen de pui en de vensters van de verdieping in de vorm van cartouches met in de hoeken florale motieven rond een veld. Boven beide oorspronkelijke ingangen cartouches met tandraderen.
Op de hoek boven de entree, in de basis van de toren een reliëf met het wapen van Breda onder gevleugelde engelen tussen twee leeuwen. Op het dakschild bevinden zich kapellen.
Het inwendige is geheel gewijzigd.

Het voormalige warenhuis is van algemeen belang. DEPARTMENT STORE built in 1924 now restaurant with residential apartments and offices above. Designed by architect C.M. van de Beld.
The former department store is situated on a plot of land enclosed by adjoining buildings at the corner of Catharinastraat and Kasteelplein.
It lies within the protected townscape. The shop front was altered after the Second World War.
During the construction of the department store, the tower above the main entrance had to be taller than that of the Vroom & Dreesmann department store on Karrestraat.
Description
The building has five storeys, the lowest being the basement and the uppermost the attic storey, under two gabled roofs at right angles to each other covered with slate, between spout gables.
Above the main entrance, on the rounded corner an octagonal tower under a copper helmet roof with ball finial. The facades and gutters of the building on the square and street sides are of tooled Bentheimer sandstone with sculpted reliefs on a basement of diabase. The rear facades are of purple-red brickwork laid in English bond. Both street-facing facades, measuring two and six bays respectively in width, are articulated over their full height with pilaster strips. Each bay contains on the ground floor one large shop window and on the upper storeys two two-part sash windows. The outer bays are one window wide.
Reliefs on the parapets between the shop front and the upper-storey windows in the form of cartouches with floral motifs in the corners around a field. Above both original entrances cartouches with cogwheels.
On the corner above the entrance, in the base of the tower a relief with the coat of arms of Breda under winged angels between two lions. On the roof shield are positioned chapels.
The interior has been completely altered.
