Inleiding

Voormalige KWEEKSCHOOL annex KLOOSTER/INTERNAAT "St. Franciscus".

Hierin gekleurd glas-in-lood in Art Décostijl.

Smeedijzeren traphek in Art Décostijl.

Introduction

Former TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE together with CONVENT/BOARDING SCHOOL "St. Franciscus". Now Hogeschool West-Brabant. Design by the Breda architect Jacq. van Groenendael. The architect was inspired in his design by the teacher training college Oud Vroenhoven of the Broeders van Maastricht. The building was constructed between 1917 and 1958 by the teaching congregation "de Broeders van Huijbergen". The teacher training college was originally established in 1902 in Bergen op Zoom. The convent and boarding school were closed around 1965. Four components can be distinguished in the whole: the main building from 1917, behind it the chapel from 1923, the right-hand wing from 1931 and the left-hand wing from 1958. South-west of the whole lies separately on the same site the hall from 1955, which is not included in the protection.

The building was constructed on part of the land of a demolished lunette of the fortifications of the city that became available around 1880. The trapezoidal plot has three sides on public roads: the main building with its front facade on the Dr. Jan Ingenhouszplein, the left wing with its front facade on the Oranjeboomstraat and the right wing with facade on the Vestkant.

The main building with adjoining side wings forms a U-shaped ground plan with the chapel centrally on the intervening schoolyard. The buildings on the street consist of three storeys. In the upper two are the representative spaces: classrooms, study halls and administration. Originally also the refectory, dormitory and library. The lower storey, the basement, has a low floor height; it contains the service rooms: cellars, storerooms and originally the kitchen. On the side of the Vestingstraat there stands on the schoolyard a double row of lime trees. On the schoolyard itself stand some maples, all from the construction period.

Description

The main building from 1917 is elongated and somewhat bent in ground plan. It contains three storeys under a hipped roof fitted with a flat section. The roof is covered with grey Frisian tiles.

Centrally in a risalite three bays wide the entrance section with a spout gable crowned by a cross. Behind it the stairwell under a gabled roof with ridge perpendicular to the square. In a niche in the top of the risalite a natural stone image of the patron saint of the teacher training college standing on console and column crowned by a baldachin. To the left of the entrance section twelve and to the right nine window bays. The main entrance, in a portico on the first floor, is accessible via a projecting ashlar platform and double staircase with balustrade.

The structure consists of red brick laid in cross-bond with friezes and ornamental work in the gable top alternated by yellow brick for the horizontal bands and round arches above the windows. Basement and wall openings have a profiled stone frame edge. The wall openings in the entrance risalite are furthermore fitted with natural stone frame and closing stones. The wall openings on the storeys contain cross windows with six-light glazing bars and in the basement segmental arch windows with centre mullion and six-light glazing bars. Some of these latter windows, on the schoolyard, are still provided with wrought-iron shutters. Furthermore on the back on the storey some cross windows have been replaced. All windows have worked ashlar sills. In the roof wooden dormers with centre mullion and four-light glazing bars under gabled roof with overhang, wind braces and roof finial. Around the roofs wooden gutters on roof supports fitted with moulded zinc boeiboards.

The interior has plastered ceilings and walls. The floor constructions are of concrete with a finish of multicoloured double-fired tiles in various patterns. Wall openings with edges of ashlar. In corridors, hall and stairwell a lining of tilework with rounded corners and chequered edge and ashlar windowsills and plinths. The hall has a double monumental ashlar staircase with intermediate landings and wrought-iron balusters, balustrade and wooden handrail with twist.

Between hall with stairwell and corridors are round-arch-shaped wall openings fitted with double doors. Above the main entrance in the hall a polychromed panel with Sacred Heart image in bas-relief with a border of tile mosaic. In the hall a bronze bell on a wrought-iron bellframe. Woodwork for doors, cupboards, frames and architraves richly worked with among other things carving in early Art Deco style.

The main building was extended three times. In 1923 the chapel was built in Neo-Romanesque style. The consecration was carried out by Mgr. P. Hopmans. The chapel has a nave of three bays and contains two storeys. The actual chapel, now in use as a library, lies in the upper storey. The lower is used as a canteen. The chapel has a cruciform ground plan with a semicircular apse under respectively gabled roofs and tower roof crowned by wrought-iron crosses. On both sides between transept and choir a square outbuilding of sacristy and storage under tent roof. Beside it on one side an octagonal stair tower with tower roof. On the roofs natural stone slates. Open-worked crossing tower on twelve supports with copper helmet roof and cross. The structure consists of red brick laid in cross-bond. Ornamental brickwork in arch frieze under gutter and plinth with edge of profiled stones.

Wall openings with two-part window in the nave and three-part in the transept arms. In these coloured stained glass in Art Deco style.

The interior of the chapel has a substructure in ashlar and a superstructure in stucco with brick vaults of yellow brick and transverse arches in red brick.

Further cut-faced frame stones for the arches of limestone with floral motifs. Mortar work in two colours: grey for the structural elements and white for the surface fills. The chapel has an entrance bay in the hall of the main building, which is likewise fitted with brick vaults of yellow brick. The vault is supported by granite columns fitted with a limestone capital with floral motifs and base. On the wall in the chapel four statues on plinth representing: Christ and Saints Maria, Theresia and Franciscus. At the entrance two statues on plinth representing Christ and Saint Tarcisius. The woodwork for frames, architraves, doors and confessionals is fitted with carving. The stone altar and communion rail from the workshop of Custers (Eindhoven) and the benches from the brothers Rombouts (Rijsbergen) are stored. In the chapel a free-standing Saint Anna statue with child. Presumed to originate from the opposite convent school "St. Anna" at Haagweg 21.

The right-hand wing from 1931 has the same architecture and the same use of materials as the main building. The wing, which lies at an angle against the east end of the main building, has a rectangular ground plan measuring three by nine bays. It contains three storeys under gabled roof and spout gable on the square. The wing has its own stairwell with granito stairs and platform, which are clamped into the wall on one side. Wrought-iron stair rail in Art Deco style. The left-hand wing from 1958 has the same architecture and use of materials as the main building. The wing, which lies at an angle against the west end of the main building, has in essence a rectangular ground plan with on the side of the Dr. Jan Ingenhouszplein a projected facade. The wing is three bays wide and eight long. The wall openings on the upper storey have here instead of a round arch a straight ashlar lintel. This wing also has its own stairwell with granito stairs and platform.
