Inleiding
Vier HERENHUIZEN uit 1897 in Neo-Renaissancestijl. Ontwerp van de Bredase architect J.M. Marijnen. De huizen zijn gebouwd op de plaats van de geslechte wallen van Breda. Ze zijn gesitueerd op een vierkant perceel op de noordelijke kop van de Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat, links en rechts ingesloten door belendende bebouwing. De voor- of zuidgevel van de huizen ligt nagenoeg in de as van de Nieuwe Ginnekenweg. Rond 1970 zijn de herenhuizen verbouwd tot kantoren en winkels. Hierbij werden de voordeur en de twee bovenliggende vensters van no. 18 dichtgemetseld.
Omschrijving
De herenhuizen tellen drie bouwlagen en zolderetage onder schilddak belegd met leien. Streng symmetrische voorgevel van twaalf traveeën met in het midden een hoge tuitgevel, die geflankeerd wordt door een torentje onder helmdak met punt. In het dakvlak tussen tuitgevel en beide torentjes een dakkapel.
Onder de tuitgevel en torentjes bevinden zich op de begane grond, enigszins verdiept of risalerend, de ingangspartijen van drie, oorspronkelijk vier, huizen. De rijk bewerkte voorgevel is opgetrokken uit rode baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband afgewisseld door speklagen en cordonlijsten van stuc en hardsteen voor plint, dorpels, consoles en gevelbekroningen. De gevel heeft een kroonlijst met fries. De muuropeningen hebben een segment- of ellipsboog met aanzeten sluitstenen boven de houten T-vormige vensters. De boogtrommels gevuld met onder meer stucwerk, siertegels en veelkleurig glas.
Waardering
De herenhuizen zijn van algemeen belang. Ze hebben architectuurhistorische waarden: ze zijn van bijzonder belang voor het oeuvre van de Bredase architect J.M. Marijnen, die in de negentiende-eeuwse uitleg van de stad een aantal markante panden heeft gebouwd; ze zijn van belang vanwege hun rijke en schilderachtige compositie en ornamentiek; ze zijn van belang als typerend voorbeeld van de vormgeving van het Bredase woonhuis in de stadsuitleg van de late negentiende eeuw. Four TOWN HOUSES built in 1897 in Neo-Renaissance style. Designed by Breda architect J.M. Marijnen. The houses were built on the site of the demolished fortifications of Breda. They are situated on a square plot at the northern end of Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat, flanked on left and right by adjoining buildings. The front or southern facade of the houses lies approximately aligned with Nieuwe Ginnekenweg. Around 1970 the town houses were converted into offices and shops. During this work the front door and the two windows above it of no. 18 were bricked up.
Description
The town houses comprise three storeys and an attic storey under a hipped roof covered with slate. Strictly symmetrical front facade of twelve bays with in the centre a tall spout gable, flanked by a small tower under a helmet roof with spire. In the roof plane between spout gable and both small towers a roof dormer.
Beneath the spout gable and small towers are located on the ground floor, somewhat recessed or projecting, the entrance sections of three, originally four, houses. The richly detailed front facade is of red brickwork laid in English bond interspersed with courses and stringcourses of stucco and hard stone for plinth, sills, consoles and gable crowns. The facade has a cornice with frieze. The wall openings have a segmental or elliptical arch with responds and ornamental voussoirs above the wooden T-shaped windows. The arch soffits filled with amongst other things stucco work, decorative tiles and multi-coloured glass.
Valuation
The town houses are of general importance. They possess architectural-historical values: they are of particular significance for the oeuvre of Breda architect J.M. Marijnen, who built a number of striking buildings in the nineteenth-century expansion of the city; they are of significance owing to their rich and picturesque composition and ornamentation; they are of significance as a typical example of the design of the Breda town house in the urban expansion of the late nineteenth century. They possess ensemble values: the houses have significance as an essential part of a larger whole, namely the urban expansion of Breda at the site of the demolished fortifications, which is of national cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance.
