Inleiding

Introduction

South of the convent of the Franciscan Sisters Penitent Recollectines from Roosendaal stands, parallel to the Nieuwstraat and the Markendaalseweg, the former CONVENT CHAPEL, dating from 1904-'05 and built according to a design by Breda architect J. Lijdsman. The chapel is executed in austere neo-gothic style, with fourteenth-century French late-gothic as an inspiration. The building has undergone some alterations over time. In the nineteen-sixties the interior was simplified.

Description

The church building consists of a nave of eight bays, to which a lower and narrower choir adjoins on the northern side, consisting of two choir bays and a three-sided closed apse. On the southern side two bays adjoin, consisting of a gallery with upper chapel (formerly a rear choir). The chapel is covered by gabled roofs, provided with slate roof covering in Meuse-stone pattern. On the roof stand various wooden roof dormers in neo-gothic style. At the level of the third and fourth bay (counted from the south) the chapel has a one-brick projecting transept, on the western side with a stepped gable with niche, in which is an image of St. Francis, stepped climbing brickwork frieze and topped by a sandstone bell turret.

The façades are constructed of brickwork and provided with square and (at apse and transept) corner-placed, once notched buttresses, provided with sandstone offsets. The thresholds are also executed in sandstone. The chapel has bands and birth and closing stones of limestone. The façades have in each bay a spare field and are closed at the top with a moulding with decorative brickwork and a profiled gutter moulding. The southern façade is blank.

The pointed-arch windows in nave and choir have limestone tracery in late-gothic style and are provided with leaded-glass panels. In the risalit is located in a simple and shallow, limestone-moulded portal under a basket-arch, a casement panel door with three-part fanlight with late-gothic tracery. The door is provided with wrought-iron fittings. The single-aisle chapel has net vaults on corbels, all with different limestone capitals with floral motifs. Also of importance are the polychrome tile floor with floral motifs and geometric figures, the gallery with panel doors with leaded-glass filling and woodcarving in the door surrounds and neo-gothic niche with image of St. Francis and the neo-gothic organ case by the firm Vermeulen. Two-manual organ, made by M. Maarschalkerweerd in 1905, pneumatised in 1939 by Vermeulen.

The convent chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical values: it is of importance as an expression of the development of care for education by Catholic congregations; it is of importance as an example of the typological development of an urban congregational convent.
