Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the western side of the Nieuwstraat, north of the old Clara Convent, stands the former CONVENT of the Franciscan Sisters Penitent Recollectines from Roosendaal. The convent was built in 1904-'05 according to a design by Breda architect J. Lijdsman that was already eight years old at that time.
The building has withstood the ravages of time without major alterations. Originally it had a passage to the Clara Convent. Probably several years after construction, a three-storey extension was realised against the rear side. The wooden extension against the northern façade, probably dating from 1905, has been considerably altered.
Description
The building has an elongated, roughly rectangular ground plan with an extension against the rear façade, contains two storeys plus an attic storey and is covered by a gabled roof with interlocking tiles.
The façades are constructed of brickwork, provided with a sandstone plinth and threshold mouldings and are enlivened by stretcher-pressed brick bands and strips. Against the façades are ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors.
The elongated street façade has thirteen window bays, of which the fourth, as well as the ninth from the left, are half-brick risalits, topped by a stepped gable and provided with doors: respectively a casement panel door with a round-arched fanlight and a panel door with wrought-iron door grille, provided with stylistic quotations from Art Nouveau. In the fanlight are placed geometrically ornamented leaded-glass panels. In the risalit of the fourth window bay on the upper floor is a composite window. The stepped gable has sandstone pylons and is topped by a wrought-iron finial.
On the ground floor, as well as on the upper floor, sash windows have been used. The southern side façade has only two window bays, with windows as in the street façade. The northern side façade is largely blank. On the ground floor stands a single-storey wooden extension, provided with wooden roller shutters and composite windows.
The interior still largely retains the original layout and is provided with simple plaster ceilings, wainscoting with white and black glazed tiles and polychrome tile floors. Against the rear façade, between the convent house and the adjoining chapel, stands a three-storey extension, provided with a flat roof.
Valuation
The convent is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values: it is of importance as an expression of the development of care for education by Catholic congregations; it is of importance as an example of the typological development of an urban congregational convent. The complex has architectural-historical values: as an example of austere neo-gothic, it is of importance for the history of architecture; it represents the oeuvre of the architect; it is of importance because of its ornamentation. Integrity/recognisability: the complex is of importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and part of the interior.
