The register's description

Inleiding.

Verbouwd in 1983.

Omschrijving.

Introduction.

LONG-RANGE FARMHOUSE built in the first quarter of the 20th century by "the Society of Welfare". Renovated in 1983.

This society, also known as "Welfare", was founded in 1822 by Reverend Jacob van Heusden, minister of Hilvarenbeek. It aimed to form a fund to support Protestants who had become unemployed after 1815. Initially for the local church community and later for all of North Brabant. After 1834 until the middle of the 20th century the funds were mainly used to support farmers in small Protestant communities in North Brabant and Limburg, as well as in the land of Maas and Waal.

The funds were initially obtained through the purchase and leasing of farmhouses and arable land and the like. Now other methods are applied.

Welfare had usufruct over five farmhouses in Hilvarenbeek in 1922. For some years the property has been in private ownership.

Description.

The farmhouse consists of one storey under a gabled roof covered with grey improved Dutch tiles lying between spout gables. The brickwork consists of hand-moulded brick laid in cross bond with natural stone ornaments on the street side and a cement plinth. The wall openings in the residential part with a rooster-comb and round ashlar arch. In the rooster-comb above the front door a natural stone voussoir with a sheaf of grain in bas-relief. This symbol was used by the Society of Welfare among other things in the organisation's membership magazine.

The symmetrical residential part in the front facade consists of three bays with the front door in the centre flanked by cross windows with shutters provided with glazing bars with rounded upper corners. The fanlight of the front door contains a geometric glazing-bar arrangement with similarly rounded upper corners. Above the front door in the roof a wooden chapel provided with glazing bars and cheeks. The business part has a transverse section with a basket-arch-shaped wall opening and half-doors flanked by a four-pane window.

On the plot important fragments of a timber-pile structure complex. Beside the house an old linden tree.

Valuation.

The farmhouse is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of agriculture in the Kempen and as an example of the typological development of the long-range farmhouse under the influence of the Society of Welfare.

Architecturally the property is important because of its sober but carefully executed ornamental work and the formal language corresponding to regional traditions. The farmhouse is important because of the integrity of its exterior and is one of the few remaining well-preserved examples of a farmhouse of the Society of Welfare.
