Inleiding
Het OBSERVATORIUM voor sterrenkunde en meteorologie bestaat uit een cylindrische toren met koepel, gelegen aan de westkant van het "Stadswandelpark", in het stadsdeel Stratum.
Het observatorium is in 1937 gebouwd in opdracht van Philips, naar ontwerp van ir. L.C. Kalff. In de jaren tachtig van de twintigste eeuw heeft het pand een renovatie ondergaan in Functionalistische vormen. De draaikoepel is ontwikkeld door de firma de Vries Robbé.
Omschrijving
Het pand bestaat uit een ronde bakstenen toren (oorspronkelijk wit geverfd, nu voorzien van een doorzichtige beschermlaag) met een koperen koepel. De schacht is door middel van betonnen vloeren onderverdeeld in drie verdiepingen van wisselende hoogte.
Tegen de toren is aan de achterkant (parkzijde) een uitbouw over de gehele hoogte van de schacht geplaatst waarin zich het trappenhuis bevindt. Deze uitbouw is voorzien van ronde ramen met metalen kozijnen. De uitbouw loopt over een gedeelte van de hoogte aan de voorzijde (straatkant) door. Hier slingert zich een trap om de toren, naar een bordes. Op verdiepingshoogte eindigt deze trap en daar bevindt zich de ingang. Een grote rechthoekige strook, gevuld met glazen bouwstenen in ijzer bewapening, zorgt voor licht in de toren.
Het geheel wordt bekroond door een koepel met schuifbare opening (kijkerspleet). Deze draaikoepel is uitgevoerd in hout en gefundeerd op een U-profiel dat door middel van rollen op kogellagers over een vaste ijzeren ring loopt. De bediening geschiedt via een zwengel die met de hand, maar ook via een elektrisch mechanisme aangedreven kan worden. In het interieur bevindt zich een entree/ontvangsthal met vide en smeedijzeren sierhek. Rond de verlichting is een smeedijzeren ring met tekens van de dierenriem aangebracht. In de koepel is de kijker, een spiegeltelescoop uit de bouwtijd, ontwikkeld door Philips, van belang.
Waardering
Het observatorium is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de ontwikkeling van de sterrenkunde en meteorologie onder invloed van de firma Philips en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het observatorium. The OBSERVATORY for astronomy and meteorology consists of a cylindrical tower with a dome, located on the west side of the "City Walking Park", in the Stratum district.

Description

This rotating dome is executed in wood and founded on a U-profile that runs by means of rollers on ball bearings over a fixed iron ring. Operation is effected via a hand crank, but can also be driven via an electrical mechanism. In the interior there is an entrance/reception hall with a void and wrought-iron railings. Around the lighting a wrought-iron ring with signs of the zodiac is fitted.
