Inleiding
Voormalig WOONHOTEL of GEZELLENHUIS, gebouwd in 1930 naar ontwerp van architect A. Ingwersen in opdracht van de woningbouwvereniging Thuis Best. In het ontwerp zijn elementen van Amsterdamse Schoolarchitectuur verwerkt. Het pand bevindt zich in het zuiden van Eindhoven aan het Dommelplantsoen en werd in samenhang met het gezellenhuis aan de Alberdingk Thijmlaan gebouwd voor de opvang van nieuwe werknemers van buiten de stad. Het ene huis was speciaal voor vrouwelijke, het andere voor mannelijke werknemers. Tussen de beide panden bevond zich een grote gezamelijke tuin. Met het bebouwen van deze tuin en de omgeving van de gezellenhuizen is de onderlinge samenhang verloren gegaan.
Omschrijving
Drielaags pand op een T-vormige plattegrond. Het geheel bestaat uit een langgerekte vleugel aan de Jonckbloetlaan en een kortere vleugel, haaks op de achtergevel. Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen onder een samengesteld schilddak waarvan het dakvlak over de bovenste verdieping doorloopt en ter plekke van de hoeken zelfs over de eerste verdieping is aangebracht. Het dak is gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. In het midden van de voorgevel bevindt zich een risaliet, voorzien van een hoge topgevel onder zadeldak. Het dakvlak is over de risaliet doorlopend tot op de eerste verdiepingsvloer aangebracht. In de risaliet bevindt zich de hoofdingang van het pand in een rondboogomlijsting van metselwerk. Aan weerszijden daarvan, op de hoeken van het risaliet, zijn bolle erkers met ramen, voorzien van een kleine roedenverdeling aanwezig. Boven de ingang bevindt zich een hoge smalle erker ter plekke van het trappenhuis, geheel in de top is een klein rond raam aangebracht. Over de gehele breedte van de verdere vleugel is een betegelde erker aanwezig, erboven is een balkon met gesloten bakstenen balustrade geplaatst. Op de begane grond is de zijgevel tussen de ramen eveneens betegeld. Op de dwarsvleugel is deze betegeling tussen de ramen op de verdieping aangebracht. Op de bovenste verdieping zijn eenvoudige ramen met een middenstijl aangebracht, op de kopse gevels zijn deze ramen als een doorlopende band uitgevoerd.
Het interieur is met de veranderende functies van het pand gewijzigd.
Het pand wordt omgeven door een tuin, van de straat gescheiden door middel van een ligusterhaag.
Waardering
Het gezellenhuis is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van woongebouwen voor werknemers in de industrie in de grote steden en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de gezellenhuizen. Former RESIDENTIAL HOTEL or HOSTEL FOR WORKERS, built in 1930 to designs of architect A. Ingwersen on commission of the housing association Thuis Best. Elements of Amsterdam School architecture have been incorporated in the design. The building is located in the south of Eindhoven on the Dommelplantsoen and was built in conjunction with the hostel on Alberdingk Thijmlaan for the reception of new employees from outside the city. One house was specially for female, the other for male employees. Between the two buildings was a large communal garden. With the building over of this garden and the surroundings of the hostels the mutual connection has been lost.
Description
Three-storey building on a T-shaped ground plan. The whole consists of a long wing on Jonckbloetlaan and a shorter wing, at right angles to the rear facade. The whole is executed in brick under a composite hipped roof of which the roof plane runs over the uppermost storey and is placed at the corners even over the first storey. The roof is covered with improved Dutch tiles. In the middle of the front facade is a risalit, provided with a tall gable end under gabled roof. The roof plane runs continuously over the risalit down to the first floor level. In the risalit is the main entrance of the building in a rounded arch framing of brickwork. On either side thereof, on the corners of the risalit, are curved bay windows with windows, furnished with small glazing bars. Above the entrance is a tall narrow bay window at the location of the staircase, entirely in the top a small round window has been placed. Over the full width of the further wing is a tiled bay window present, above it is a balcony with closed brick balustrade placed. On the ground floor the side facade between the windows is likewise tiled. On the transverse wing this tiling is placed between the windows on the storey. On the uppermost storey simple windows with a central mullion have been placed, on the end facades these windows are executed as a continuous band.
The interior has been altered with the changing functions of the building.
The building is surrounded by a garden, separated from the street by means of a privet hedge.
