Inleiding
FAMILIEGRAF van de familie De Block (tabaksfabrikanten) op de begraafplaats van de St. Joriskerk in het stadsdeel Stratum. Het graf bestaat uit een kindergraf waaromheen een viertal gedenkstenen van diverse familieleden zijn geplaatst.
Omschrijving
Dit kindergraf neemt een centrale plaats in door de ligging maar ook vanwege de opvallende verschijningsvorm. Het meisje is slapend, liggend in kussens, afgebeeld. De sculptuur, uitgevoerd in witte natuursteen, is gemaakt door beeldhouwer L. de Vriendt in 1878. Het beeld is in een glazen kistje op een natuurstenen sokkel gezet. De glasplaten zijn gevat in ijzeren profielen waarbij de hoeken door middel van smeedijzeren krullen worden benadrukt. De sokkel heeft bewerkte panelen, aan één zijde is een gedicht gegraveerd, op een andere zijde is de tekst AAN ONS ENIGST DOCHTERTJE/LOUISE ADOLPHINE HELENE THEORINE/DE BLOCK/GEBOREN TE STRATUM 26 SEPTEMBER 1873/EN ALDAAR OVERLEDEN 1 JANUARI 1878 leesbaar. Verder is dekoratief beeldhouwwerk in de vorm van bloemmotieven op de sokkel aangebracht. Op de grafplaten rondom de sokkel zijn enkele inskripties leesbaar, onder andere de namen A.A.R. de Block 1901, A... de Block-Smulders 1930 en R.L. de Block 1953. Aan de voorzijde (vanaf de entree van het kerkhof gezien) zijn twee hardstenen stoeppalen geplaatst.
Waardering
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het kindergraf. Het heeft kunsthistorisch belang als voorbeeld van het werk van het atelier De Vriendt. Het is gaaf bewaard gebleven en typologisch uiterst zeldzaam, vooral vanwege de aanwezigheid van de glazen omhulling.

FAMILY GRAVE of the De Block family (tobacco manufacturers) on the burial ground of the St. Joriskerk in the Stratum district. The grave consists of a children's grave around which four memorial stones of various family members have been placed.
Description
This children's grave occupies a central place both because of its location and because of its striking appearance. The girl is depicted sleeping, lying in cushions. The sculpture, executed in white natural stone, was made by sculptor L. de Vriendt in 1878. The figure is placed in a glass casket on a natural stone base. The glass panes are set in iron profiles, with the corners emphasised by means of wrought-iron scrolls. The base has worked panels; on one side a poem is engraved, on another side the text AAN ONS ENIGST DOCHTERTJE/LOUISE ADOLPHINE HELENE THEORINE/DE BLOCK/GEBOREN TE STRATUM 26 SEPTEMBER 1873/EN ALDAAR OVERLEDEN 1 JANUARI 1878 is legible. Furthermore, decorative sculptural work in the form of floral motifs has been applied to the base. On the grave slabs around the base, several inscriptions are legible, including the names A.A.R. de Block 1901, A... de Block-Smulders 1930 and R.L. de Block 1953.
