Inleiding
Voormalig WOONHUIS en ATELIER van beeldhouwer J.Custers. Gebouwd in 1899 met elementen van de Neo-Gotiek en Neo-Renaissance.
Het pand is opgenomen in de straatwand van de Geldropseweg, nabij het centrum van Eindhoven. In de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw is het pand uitgebreid met een poortgebouw waardoor het atelier van de straat gescheiden werd. Deze uitbreiding valt buiten de bescherming.
Het woonhuis is tegenwoordig (1999) in gebruik als kantoor.
Omschrijving
Tweelaags pand, vijf traveeën breed, met een middenrisaliet met topgevel.
Het pand heeft een plat dak dat aan de straatzijde van een dakschild, gedekt met kruispannen, is voorzien.
Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen met een tandlijst onder de goot. Over de gehele breedte van de voorgevel loopt een natuurstenen plint. Ter plekke van de middenrisaliet gaat deze plint over in een trede naar de paneeldeur. Beide uiteinden van de voorgevel zijn voorzien van afsluitende muurdammen die bovenaan een verdikking hebben, steunend op een natuurstenen console met bladmotief. Deze muurdammen worden bekroond door pinakeltjes. De topgevel boven de ingang, heeft een gepleisterde omlijsting met bekroning en wordt eveneens geflankeerd door muurdammen op hardstenen consoles.
Op de begane grond is de roedenverdeling van de ramen doorbroken. Op de verdieping bevinden zich T-ramen, met een driedelig bovenlicht. Boven de ramen en deur zijn segmentbogen aangebracht waarbij de boogvelden op de begane grond zijn gevuld met sculptuur, tussen bloemmotieven is in schilden het opschrift "AN/NO/18/99" leesbaar. Op de verdieping is in de boogvelden polychroom metselmozaïek aanwezig. De segmentbogen zijn hier twee aan twee, in een verdiept vlak, onder een overhuivende boog geplaatst waarbij natuurstenen consoles de bogen ondersteunen. Onder de ramen is een doorlopende hardstenen cordonlijst aanwezig.
De gevel wordt verder verlevendigd door het gebruik van diverse kleuren baksteen in de speklagen en in een band met metselmozaïek, onder de verdiepingsramen. De voorgevel is rijk voorzien van decoratieve elementen, merendeels uitgevoerd in natuursteen. Aan weerszijden van de ingang zijn sculpturen geplaatst van manspersonen in middeleeuwse kledij die de beeldhouwkunst en architectuur vertegenwoordigen. In een portretmedaillon in de topgevel komt de schilderkunst aan bod.
In het interieur zijn op de begane grond diverse stucplafonds uit de bouwtijd bewaard gebleven alsmede een ijzeren cassette-plafond met ingestanste motieven op de verdieping.
Schuin achter het huis bevindt zich het voormalig atelier van de beeldhouwer. Dit bestaat uit een eenvoudig rechthoekig gebouw van één grote ruimte waarin halverwege de totale hoogte een insteek is aangebracht.
Waardering
Het atelierwoonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van kerkelijke kunstwerkplaatsen in het katholieke zuiden. Description
Two-storey building, five bays wide, with a central risalit with a stepped gable.
The building has a flat roof which on the street side is provided with a roof shield, covered with crossed tiles.
The whole is executed in brick with a dentil moulding under the gutter. Across the full width of the front facade runs a natural stone plinth. At the location of the central risalit this plinth transitions into a step towards the panel door. Both ends of the front facade are provided with terminating wall buttresses which have a thickening at the top, resting on a natural stone console with leaf motif. These wall buttresses are crowned by pinnacles. The stepped gable above the entrance has a plastered frame with crown and is likewise flanked by wall buttresses on hard stone consoles.
On the ground floor the glazing bar arrangement of the windows is broken. On the upper storey are T-windows with a three-part fanlight. Above the windows and door are segmental arches placed, with the arch fields on the ground floor filled with sculpture, among flower motifs the inscription "AN/NO/18/99" is legible in shields. On the upper storey polychrome brick mosaic is present in the arch fields. The segmental arches are here placed two by two, in a recessed plane, under an overhanging arch, with natural stone consoles supporting the arches. Under the windows is a continuous hard stone cordon moulding.
The facade is further enlivened by the use of various colours of brick in the speckled courses and in a band with brick mosaic, under the upper storey windows. The front facade is richly provided with decorative elements, mostly executed in natural stone. On either side of the entrance are sculptures placed of male figures in medieval clothing representing sculpture and architecture. In a portrait medallion in the stepped gable painting is represented.
In the interior, on the ground floor various stucco ceilings from the time of construction have been preserved, as well as an iron cassette-ceiling with stamped motifs on the upper storey.
Slightly behind the house is the former studio of the sculptor. This consists of a simple rectangular building with one large space in which a mezzanine is provided halfway up the full height.

The studio dwelling house is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as a special expression of a socio-economic development, namely the establishment of ecclesiastical art workshops in the Catholic south.
