Inleiding
COLLEGEGEBOUW gebouwd als St. Joriscollege (voor jongens) en Catharinalyceum (voor meisjes). Het pand bestaat uit twee haaks op elkaar geplaatste vleugels, gelegen op de hoek van de Jan Smitzlaan met Knuvelderlaan vh. Elzentlaan.
De bouw van het pand startte in 1923 naar een reeds in 1918 gemaakt ontwerp van Th. Taen (Amsterdam). Bij vertrek van deze architect naar het toenmalige Nederlands Indië werd de opdracht overgenomen door het bureau Ed. Cuypers.
Omschrijving
Het pand bestaat uit drie tweelaagse bouwmassa's namelijk twee haaks op elkaar staande vleugels en een schuin geplaatst middenstuk met ingangspartij. Het schuin geplaatste deel wordt aan weerszijden met de vleugels verbonden door middel van gebogen bouwmassa's, eveneens twee lagen hoog. De verschillende onderdelen zijn alle voorzien van een schilddak met pirons. Een uitzondering daarop zijn de gebogen delen, hier is een plat dak aangebracht.
Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen (op een fundering van gewapend beton) waarbij in reliëf decoraties zijn aangebracht in de vorm van velden onder de ramen en als lijsten onder de dakrand.
De schuingeplaatste hoofdmassa is voorzien van een risaliet. Deze risaliet is hoger opgetrokken en steekt boven de goot uit. Hierin bevindt zich de ingang, in een breed portiek met Classicistische zuilen. De zijvleugels worden in tweeën gedeeld door bolle erkers over de gehele hoogte van het pand. Als afdekking hebben deze erkers een koepel, gedekt met daktegels.
De ramen zijn voorzien van grote kruiskozijnen met horizontale roeden kennen. De dakkapellen die samengesteld in het dakvlak zijn aangebracht zijn voorzien van gebogen frontons.
In het interieur zijn centrale hal en trappartij nog in de oorspronkelijke vorm bewaard gebleven.
Aan de straatzijde heeft het pand gazons, aan de achterzijde is een plaats aangelegd.
Waardering
De voormalige school is van algemeen belang. Het pand heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een culturele en geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de ontwikkeling van het onderwijs in het interbellum. Het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het schoolgebouw, met name door de opvallende plattegrondvorm. Architectuurhistorisch is het belangrijk vanwege de stijl, de detaillering en als voorbeeld van het werk van de architect Taen en het Bureau Cuypers. Het heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de markante situering op een straathoek in het villapark Den Elzent. Het is waardevol vanwege de gaafheid van in- en exterieur.

COLLEGE BUILDING erected as St. Joriscollege (for boys) and Catharinalyceum (for girls). The building consists of two wings set at right angles to each other, located at the corner of Jan Smitzlaan with Knuvelderlaan formerly Elzentlaan.
Construction of the building started in 1923 based on a design made already in 1918 by Th. Taen (Amsterdam). When this architect departed for the then Dutch East Indies the commission was taken over by the office Ed. Cuypers.
Description
The building consists of three two-storey building masses namely two wings at right angles to each other and a diagonally placed central section with entrance bay. The diagonally placed part is connected on either side with the wings by means of curved building masses, likewise two storeys high. The various components are all provided with a hipped roof with finials. An exception to this are the curved parts, where a flat roof is applied.
The whole is executed in brick (on a foundation of reinforced concrete) with decorations applied in relief in the form of panels below the windows and as bands below the roof edge.
The diagonally placed main mass is provided with a risalit. This risalit is built higher and protrudes above the gutter. Within this is the entrance, in a broad portico with Classicist columns. The side wings are divided in two by curved bays extending the full height of the building. As cover these bays have a dome, covered with roof tiles.

The former school is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of cultural and spiritual development, namely the development of education in the interwar period. Architecturally it is important on account of the style, the detailing and as an example of the work of architect Taen and the Cuypers office. It has ensemble values on account of the striking location at a street corner in the villa park Den Elzent. It is valuable on account of the integrity of interior and exterior.
