Inleiding.

Introduction.

The CHURCH of H. Clemens stands at the corner of Huisacker and the Willibrordlaan and was built in Neo-Romanesque style in 1889 and subsequently enlarged. The architects were C. Franssen, W. van Aalst and J. van der Valk. The church served as a replacement for its predecessor, which had burned down. The building was originally designed by C. Franssen. The tower was enlarged in 1900 according to a design by W. van Aalst. The side aisles were built in 1937-1938 by J. van der Valk. In 1992-1993 the sacristy was extended by one bay.

Description.

The originally single-nave cruciform church contains behind the tower on a square base three bays, a transept with a blind bay and a semicircular apse. The facades are built of red mechanical brick, divided into field panels and provided with straight and climbing friezes. Decorative bands are executed in grey brick. Sills, cornices and decorative elements are of stone. The side aisles under a lean-to roof are executed in brown mechanical brick. On the gabled and lean-to roofs lie slates in Maas bond.

The tower is flanked by square side chapels whose roofs join the wall of the nave. On the left side the tower is provided with a stair turret. The tower consists of three storeys. In the first is the projecting portal with gabled roof and cross. This contains the wing doors with semicircular fanlight with round arch tracery. In the second storey there are on the front two, and on the sides one round arch window. The third storey ends in a triangular field. A sound hole with clock mechanism is incorporated with on either side two blind round arch niches. On the slightly tapered tower spire with slates in Maas bond stands a worked cross.

In the side chapels, the nave and the apse there are round arch windows with leaded glass.

The transept has a small projection for the confessional space, above it a round arch niche with three windows and a round window. In the gable are two narrow round arch windows placed in a field panel.

The sacristy and subsidiary sacristy likewise have round arch windows and a hipped roof with ornamental roof cresting. On the roof of the nave stand roof dormers under gabled roof.

The central nave is provided with a wooden barrel vault resting on round ribs with worked bosses. The plastered and painted space is articulated by pilasters. The low and narrow side aisles, which are separated from the central nave by round arches on square piers, have a coffered ceiling. The space has a tile floor.

On either side of the plastered semicircular apse is a round arch niche. On the left a statue of Mary is placed, on the right a statue of the Holy Family. Against the pilasters and the choir are various nineteenth-century holy statues. The late nineteenth-century oak pulpit has an octagonal body with polychrome reliefs with depictions of Christ and saints. The communion rail likewise dates from the last quarter of the nineteenth century and is of white marble with reliefs, separated from each other by marble columns.
