Inleiding.

Introduction.

To the south of the Markt stands the SINT NICOLAASKERK, designed in 1927 by Jan Stuyt. The current church replaced its predecessor by architect Weber from 1858-1860. Part of Weber's tower was sheathed and incorporated into the new building. The church is constructed in a decorative Expressionistic brickwork style with references to Neo-Gothic.

The brickwork decoration in the interior is plastered and overpainted. The entrance door from tower to church, the organ and the western organ gallery have been renewed. To the south of the choir a new single-storey extension.

Description.

Constructed of brickwork, a three-aisle, blind basilical church on a cruciform plan with a nave of four bays and side aisles widening towards the transept. After the transept follow one choir bay and a lower, rounded-off choir with ambulatory. On the west side the entrance section under the tower. Tower and choir are flanked by two built-out chapels. The exterior and interior are characterised by the use of chevron arches above all window and door openings. The tower has two stages with, on the north side, a built-up round staircase tower with octagonal spire. On the ground floor a portico with a double door above which a tile tableau, depicting Christ with the text DOMUS DEI PORTA COELI. Above the portico a star-shaped window with radial tracery and a niche with a stone console and baldachin containing an image of the holy Nicholas. In the side walls lancet windows; on the south side, high in the wall, a niche with an image of Our Lady of Den Bosch (?). On the second stage sound holes with clockface, flanked by corner towers with steep tent roofs surmounted by weathervanes, the whole crowned by an octagonal spire with wrought-iron cross and weathercock.

The tower is flanked by two built-out polygonal chapels. In the gable walls of the side aisles triple windows and a stepped brickwork pattern with brick teeth. In the gable of the transepts a composite window consisting of six chevron-arch windows under a star-shaped window with radial tracery. In the choir ambulatory basement windows and rectangular coupled windows; in the apse windows under chevron arch.

Along the roof edge of the choir brickwork with plaiting. North of the choir an extension under a flat roof with brick teeth, roof gutter on corbels and a door. On the north and south sides of the nave and on the south transept built-up confessionals under monopitch roofs with roof gutters and flat roofs. Nave and transversely placed gables above the side aisles are covered with gabled roofs, furnished with slate in Maas bond. On the ambulatory and the apse monopitch roofs following the curve of the choir. The built-out chapels beside the tower are covered by polygonal spires with weathervanes. On the roof of the nave roof dormers under gabled roofs with triangular windows.

In the austere, plastered and painted interior pointed-arch arcades between piers with pilaster strips. In the nave, transept and choir rib vaults; in the side aisles and chapels groined vaults. South of the pentagonal choir a chapel with a semi-circular apse; on the north side a chapel with a straight closure. All windows have stained-glass infills, designed by Luc van Hoek and executed by a glass workshop in Roermond, dated 1936. In the southern side aisles, from west to east: Vincentius a Paulo, Nicholas, representation of the Delivery of the Keys (John XII,17). In the northern side aisle: Elizabeth of Thuringia, Willibrordus, Paul. In the south transept: Mary surrounded by the Seven Sacraments, among them from left to right Adam and Eve, Isaiah, Ahaz and Jasur, the Annunciation, Homage to Mary, Visitation and the saints Nesterus, Cyrillus and Bernardus. In the north transept: a Christmas representation with the Adoration of the Magi and Shepherds and the Ascension of Christ. In the upper window the Trinity surrounded by the evangelist symbols. In the chapel south of the choir Mary as Mater Amabilis; in the northern chapel the Adoration of Christ. In the choir five windows from the previous church (c. 1925): the Sacrifice of Abraham, the Manna Rain, the Resurrection, the Miraculous Multiplication of Bread and Fishes, the Wedding at Cana.

In the chapel south of the tower scenes relating to Our Lady of Handel; in the northern chapel various representations including a tree (Apoc. 22) and cock (Rom. 2). The sculptural work (by H. v.d.Geld and P. Verdonk) is, with the exception of the Madonna image by Luc van Hoek (1936), from elsewhere. In the chapel north of the choir a baptismal font (1921), originating from the previous church. Organ and organ case are not of value from the point of view of monument preservation.

Evaluation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the village church in the interwar period. The building has architectural-historical importance through its style and detailing, which testify to the way in which the architect reached a compromise between tradition and innovation in church building, and is of art-historical importance through the interior components, including the exceptional window series by Luc van Hoek. The building is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect Stuyt. It has ensemble values owing to its particular situation, connected with the development of the settlement. It is of importance owing to the architectural-historical and typological rarity and the rarity of preserved churches by Stuyt.
