Inleiding.
Aan de zuidzijde van de zogeheten 'Kleine Markt' werd in 1927 een RAADHUIS gebouwd naar de plannen van architect Taen Err Toung uit Amsterdam die hiervoor reeds in 1920 een ontwerp had gemaakt. In 1927 volgt een vernieuwd ontwerp van de hand van dezelfde architect in samenwerking met Ant. Bogers uit Eindhoven. Aannemer werd P. Martens uit Valkenswaard. In maart 1928 werd het raadhuis geopend. Het vertoont sterke invloed van de Um 1800-stijl.
Na samenvoeging van de gemeenten Borkel en Schaft, Dommelen en Valkenswaard in 1934 werd het noodzakelijk het bestaande raadhuis te vergroten. Architectenbureau Ed. Cuijpers uit Amsterdam ontwierp een in dezelfde stijl uitgevoerde westelijke vleugel die de gebogen rooilijn van de Markt volgde. A. van de Velden uit Eindhoven was de aannemer. Op 25 januari 1935 werd de nieuwe vleugel in gebruik genomen. Het pand heeft inmiddels een nieuwe functie gekregen. Bij de verbouwing en aanpassing heeft men de oorspronkelijke dispositie gevolgd en is de vleugel van 1935 gesloopt.
Beschrijving.
Het oudste gedeelte van het raadhuis (1927-1928), op een nagenoeg vierkante plattegrond, is tweelaags en heeft een geknikt schilddak gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen en met een bakgoot op klossen. De symmetrische voorgevel en het risaliserende centrale deel worden begrensd door gemetselde, geblokte hoeklisenen. Het risaliserende deel heeft een lage attiek. Aan deze risaliet een overwelfd portiek met bordestrap en balkon.
Op de begane grond twee gekoppelde vierruits openslaande kelderramen met diefijzers. Op de hoofdverdieping en op de etage, twee kruisvensters met zesruits openslaande vensters en vierruits bovenlichten met glas-in-lood-vulling. Voor het onderste deel van de vensters op de begane grond paneelluiken met diabolo-motief. In de risaliet een dubbele paneeldeur met halfrond bovenlicht waarin radiale tracering met glas-in-lood-vulling. Links van de deur een zesruits openslaand venster en een hardstenen brievenbus met opschrift POST, rechts van de deur een ingebouwde, ondiepe kast met openslaand venster en een gevelsteen EERSTE STEEN / GELEGD 18-7-1927 / E.A.J. KUIPER / BURGEMEESTER / J. KANEN / CH.P. JASPERS / WETHOUDERS / H. LEEMANS / SECRETARIS. Het bordes, waaronder een trap met hardstenen treden, heeft aan drie zijden een rondboog met hardstenen geboortestenen waarin trekstangen. Zij ondersteunen een balkon met smeedijzeren balustrade.
Op de etage, in het risaliserende centrale deel, een gedeeltelijk beglaasde deur met vierruits bovenlicht die toegang verleent tot het balkon. Aan weerszijden van de deur een negenruits openslaand venster met zesruits bovenlicht. De bovenlichten hebben een glas-in-lood-vulling. Op het dak drie dakkapellen met plat dak. De symmetrisch ingedeelde linker zijgevel heeft op de begane grond en de etage twee vensters als aan de voorzijde. Centraal op beide verdiepingen drie zesruits openslaande vensters, op de begane grond met een vierruits bovenlicht met glas-in-lood-vulling. Ook de zijgevel wordt begrensd door geblokte hoeklisenen. De rechter zijgevel is rond 1997 gereconstrueerd en herkreeg toen het veelhoekig uitgebouwde trappenhuis. De overige details volgen de linker zijgevel. Aan de achterzijde op de begane grond en de etage vier kruisvensters. Op de begane grond zes kelderramen. Het dak wordt bekroond door pirons en een gesloten vierkante houten dakruiter met afgeschuinde hoeken waarvan het onderste deel bekleed met daktegels. Op de dakruiter een zinken tentdak met piron. In de dakruiter is een uurwerk van de firma Eijsbouts uit Asten geplaatst.
Aan de voorzijde van het bordes een gevelsteen met voorstelling van Sint Nicolaas. In de afgeronde hoek van de nieuwe vleugel een gevelsteen met voorstelling van een valk (beide gevelstenen zijn verplaatst).
In het interieur zijn de plafonds nog oorspronkelijk. Ook zijn enkele paneeldeuren alsmede de deurkozijnen nog aanwezig. Een ingelijst tegeltableau voorstellende de laatste valkenjacht in Valkenswaard, dat in 1928 bij de opening van het raadhuis werd aangeboden, heeft als opschrift onder de voorstelling: TER HERINNERING AAN DE LAATSTE VALKENJACHT / AANGEBODEN AAN DE GEMEENTE VALKENSWAARD / DOOR DE SOCIETEIT 'EENSGEZINDHEID' / APRIL 1928. Het tableau werd vervaardigd bij 'De Porceleyne Fles' te Delft en is gesigneerd door V.P.
Waardering.
Het voormalige raadhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een bestuurlijke en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van nieuwe gebouwen voor het gemeentelijk bestuur in het interbellum en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het dorpsraadhuis. To the left of the door a six-pane casement window and a stone letterbox with inscription POST, to the right of the door a built-in, shallow cupboard with casement window and a facade stone FIRST STONE / LAID 18-7-1927 / E.A.J. KUIPER / MAYOR / J. KANEN / CH.P. JASPERS / ALDERMEN / H. LEEMANS / SECRETARY. The steps, beneath which is a staircase with stone treads, has on three sides a round arch with stone keystones in which draw bars. They support a balcony with wrought iron balustrade.
On the upper floor, in the projecting central section, a partially glazed door with four-pane fanlight which provides access to the balcony. On either side of the door a nine-pane casement window with six-pane fanlight. The fanlights have leaded glass filling. On the roof three roof dormers with flat roof. The symmetrically arranged left side facade has on the ground floor and upper floor two windows as on the front. Centrally on both storeys three six-pane casement windows, on the ground floor with a four-pane fanlight with leaded glass filling. The side facade is also bounded by rusticated corner pilasters. The right side facade was reconstructed around 1997 and then regained the polygonal projecting stairwell. The remaining details follow the left side facade. On the rear on the ground floor and upper floor four cross windows. On the ground floor six basement windows. The roof is crowned by roof cresting and a closed square wooden cupola with bevelled corners of which the lower part is clad with roof tiles. On the cupola a zinc tent roof with roof cresting. In the cupola a clock mechanism from the firm Eijsbouts from Asten has been placed.
On the front of the steps a facade stone with representation of Saint Nicholas. In the rounded corner of the new wing a facade stone with representation of a falcon (both facade stones have been relocated).
In the interior the ceilings are still original. Also some panel doors as well as the door frames are still present. A framed tile tableau depicting the last falcon hunt in Valkenswaard, which was presented at the opening of the town hall in 1928, has the inscription beneath the representation: IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE LAST FALCON HUNT / PRESENTED TO THE MUNICIPALITY OF VALKENSWAARD / BY THE SOCIETY 'EENSGEZINDHEID' / APRIL 1928. The tableau was made at 'De Porceleyne Fles' in Delft and is signed by V.P.
