Inleiding Dubbel WOONHUIS in functionalistische stijl, 1929. Gebouwd in opdracht van J. Drummen en M. Beaujean, respectievelijk gemeente-architect en directeur gemeentewerken van de gemeente Brunssum. Het ontwerp is van de hand van architect J. Drummen.
Het pand is gesitueerd tegen de in oostelijke richting sterk aflopende helling van de Kruisberg.
Het woonhuis van architect Drummen (nr. 31) werd nog voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitgebreid met een kantoorruimte van één laag onder plat. In 1950 werd dit kantoor met één bouwlaag verhoogd, de entree van de kantoorvleugel vernieuwd. Dit kantoor is precies op de vier windrichtingen georiënteerd. Op het oorspronkelijke balkon tegen de achtergevel van Kruisbergstraat 31 een erker met balkon aangebracht. Vanwege de wijzigingen aan exterieur en interieur is het pand Kruisbergstraat 31 UITGESLOTEN van bescherming. Eveneens UITGESLOTEN van bescherming zijn de garage en carport bij Kruisbergstraat 29.
Omschrijving De woning Kruisbergstraat 29 is gebouwd op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige PLATTEGROND, zowel aan de voor- als achtergevelzijde voorzien van gecombineerde risalieten en gesitueerd in lengterichting ten opzichte van de Kruisbergstraat. Het geheel telt een souterrainverdieping en twee BOUWLAGEN onder een plat dak. Aan de straatzijde zijn van de westgevel uitsluitend de eerste en de tweede laag zichtbaar, de souterrainverdieping is enkel aan de afhellende oostzijde volledig vrijgebleven. Het platte DAK heeft geen overstekken.
Het pand heeft een gewapend betonconstructie, ingevuld met wit gepleisterde bakstenen gevels. Stalen venster- en deurkozijnen, houten voordeur. De VOORGEVEL biedt een sterk gesloten aanblik en telt drie vensterassen. In de eerste bouwlaag van het grote vooruitspringende voorgeveldeel twee rechthoekige stalen vensters: éénmaal verticaal ingedeeld en éénmaal dubbel verticaal ingedeeld. Kruisbergstraat 29 heeft nog de authentieke rechthoekige houten voordeur met rond kijkvenster, onder een betonnen luifel. Naast de deur een rechthoekig stalen venster. In de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich twee rechthoekige, oorspronkelijk verticaal ingedeelde stalen vensters, waartussen een rechthoekig dubbel verticaal ingedeeld stalen venster. Het venster boven de voordeur heeft geen verticale indeling meer.
De smalle, terugliggende hoekpartij in de voorgevel is blind. In de oksel met het vooruitspringende geveldeel een de gevelhoogte overstijgende schoorsteen. De noordelijke ZIJGEVEL van Kruisbergstraat 29 is nagenoeg blind. Eén venster van de in de achtergevel beginnende reeks loopt door in de zijgevel. Tegen de zijgevel een steile bakstenen trap met smeedijzeren balustrade.
De ACHTERGEVEL van Kruisbergstraat 29 is geheel in tact. In het risalerende middengeveldeel bevinden zich ter hoogte van de souterrainverdieping twee rechthoekige, verticaal ingedeelde stalen vensters. In de eerste laag een doorlopende reeks van zes vensters, voortgezet in de oksel met het terugliggende geveldeel. In de tweede laag wederom twee rechthoekige, verticaal ingedeelde stalen vensters. Het terugliggende hoekgeveldeel heeft in de souterrainverdieping een rechthoekige, dubbele stalen deur met verticale indeling van de glaspanelen. Boven deze deur een betonnen luifel, steunend op één kolom. Deze luifel fungeert ter hoogte van de eerste bouwlaag als balkonvloer. In deze eerste laag een dubbele, rechthoekige stalen balkondeur waarop een reeks van drie zijlichten aansluit. Eén zijlicht is in de zijgevel doorgezet. Het balkon heeft een fragiele, smeedijzeren balustrade. Hierboven, in de tweede laag, een rechthoekig tweevoudig verticaal ingedeeld stalen venster.
De INTERIEURindeling van het pand is gaaf bewaard gebleven: omstreeks 1965 is er in de woonkamer een open haard gerealiseerd; de scheidingsmuur tussen de in de souterrainverdieping ingerichte keuken en bijkeuken is verwijderd.
Waardering
Het woonhuis aan de Kruisbergstraat 29 is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch belang vanwege de op het moment van de realisatie innovatieve architectonische waarde van het ontwerp. De architectuurhistorische waarden van het pand worden bepaald door de functionalistische bouwstijl, door de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het materiaalgebruik en de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur.
