Inleiding
LOURDESGROT, tweede helft negentiende eeuw, gesitueerd op het voormalige kerkhof bij de van rijkswege beschermde oude parochiekerk (elfde-achttiennde eeuw) van Merkelbeek. Dit ommuurde kerkhof is gesitueerd op de splitsing van Groeneweg en Merkelbeekerstraat.
Omschrijving
Koepelvormige grot in gepleisterd metselwerk met altaar, waarboven in een aparte nis een Mariabeeld is geplaatst. In de toegangsopening een tweedelig smeedijzeren hekwerk.
Waardering
De Lourdesgrot is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geestelijke ontwikkeling. De grot is vanwege de situering van belang voor het aanzien van het dorp en verkeert in een redelijk gave staat. Bovendien beschikken dergelijke grotten in nationaal perspectief over een redelijke functionele zeldzaamheid. LOURDES GROTTO, second half nineteenth century, situated on the former churchyard of the nationally protected old parish church (eleventh-eighteenth centuries) of Merkelbeek. This walled churchyard is situated at the junction of Groeneweg and Merkelbeekerstraat.
