Inleiding
Bakstenen MUUR met smeedijzeren HEKWERKEN en H.HARTGROT, tweede helft negentiende eeuw, rond het voormalige kerkhof bij de van rijkswege beschermde oude parochiekerk (elfde-achttiende eeuw). Het geheel is gesitueerd op de splitsing van Groeneweg en Merkelbeekerstraat.
Omschrijving
Bakstenen kerkhofmuur met kunststenen bovenafdekking, gekenmerkt door op regelmatige afstanden terugkerende lisenen, onderling verbonden door drie spitsboogfriezen. Kolom met stucafdekking op de splitsing van Groeneweg en Merkelbeekerstraat. De muur fungeert tevens als keermuur voor het hooggelegen achterliggende kerkhof. Zowel aan de zijde van de Groeneweg als de Merkelbeekerstraat wordt de muur onderbroken door dubbele smeedijzeren hekwerken tussen hekpijlers.
Aan de zijde van de Merkelbeekerstraat hebben de hekpijlers rode verblendstenen profiellijsten, met gepleisterde bekroning en basementen. Tussen de hekpijlers een opgaande trap met gepleisterde treden, aan beide zijden van de trap een karakteristieke boombeplanting. De muren aan weerszijden van de trap zijn eveneens voorzien van een smeedijzeren balustrade.
Aan de zijde van de Groeneweg zijn de hekpijlers uitgevoerd in één baksteensoort en afgedekt met stuc. Aan weerszijden van de tussenliggende traptreden een bakstenen muur met smeedijzeren balustrade. Tegen de muur, onmiddellijk naast de hekpijlers aan de Groeneweg, bevindt zich een rustieke H.Hartgrot gesticht door M.J. Palmen, burgemeester te Merkelbeek tussen 1884 en 1891.
Waardering
De kerkhofmuur met hekwerken en H.Hartgrot zijn van cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een culturele en geestelijke ontwikkelingen alsmede als aanduiding van de historische begrenzing van het kerkterrein; daarnaast is stilistisch belang gelegen in de toepassing van het spitsboogmotief en bezit de muur c.a. ouderdomswaarde. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden hoofdzakelijk bepaald door de esthetische kwaliteiten van het geheel. De kerkhofmuur is gebouwd rondom het oude parochiekerkje van Merkelbeek en vanwege deze situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling en van belang voor het aanzien van dit dorp. Het bouwwerk beschikt over een redelijke architectonische gaafheid en is van belang voor de visuele gaafheid van de dorpse omgeving. Bovendien beschikken dergelijke kerkhofmuren in regionaal perspectief over een redelijke typologische zeldzaamheid.

Description
Brickwork churchyard wall with artificial stone coping, characterized by pilasters recurring at regular intervals, interconnected by three pointed arch friezes. Column with stucco coping at the junction of Groeneweg and Merkelbeekerstraat. The wall also serves as a retaining wall for the elevated churchyard behind it. On both the Groeneweg side and the Merkelbeekerstraat side, the wall is interrupted by double wrought-iron fencing between fence piers.
On the Merkelbeekerstraat side, the fence piers have red facing brick profile mouldings, with plastered coping and bases. Between the fence piers an ascending staircase with plastered treads, on both sides of the staircase characteristic tree planting. The walls on either side of the staircase are also fitted with a wrought-iron balustrade.
On the Groeneweg side, the fence piers are executed in one type of brick and covered with stucco. On either side of the intermediate stair treads a brick wall with wrought-iron balustrade. Against the wall, immediately next to the fence piers on the Groeneweg, is a rustic Sacred Heart Grotto founded by M.J. Palmen, mayor of Merkelbeek between 1884 and 1891.
