Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
A CASEMATE of the S-type built in 1939-1940, forming part of the Maas-IJssel line. This line was planned immediately after the Anschluss of Austria to Germany as part of the Strategic Defence of the Netherlands. The purpose of the line was to prevent, or at least delay, an enemy crossing of the major rivers. This would provide more time in the Fortress Holland for establishing the inundations. In the westerly Peel-Raam position too there would be more time to prepare the defence. Of the many hundreds of light casemates of the Maas line only a handful remain. Besides the destruction from the May days of 1940 this is the result of post-war demolition. A coherent group of light S- and B-casemates is located along the Maas at Cuijk. The S-casemate at Oeffelt is important in connection with the two bridge casemates and the railway bridge. The casemate was designed by the engineers of the Field Army.
The improved design executed at Gennep comes from the Central Inundation and Technical Bureau of the Corps of Engineers.
The casemate played a particularly significant role in military operations on 10 May 1940. At this location, through failure to establish the blockade in time, a German armoured train was able to cross the bridge and break through both the Maas line and the Peel-Raam position. This action was largely decisive for the further course of the five-day war. After the blockade was finally closed a bitter struggle took place at this location, in which this S-casemate also participated.
Description
Reinforced concrete light S-casemate, according to standardized design with floor, covering, rear wall and three-sided bevelled front facade with a thickness of 0.8 metre. In the front wall three gun ports for light machine gun, originally closable with 2 centimetre thick cast-steel blinds. The casemate, with a single fighting space for three men, could provide frontal and flanking fire on the river section. This S-casemate had, in addition to the bridge casemates, a particular task: the protection of the terrain directly south of the former railway bridge. The gun ports and the entrance hatch located on the gorge side have been bricked up since the war.
Valuation
The S-casemate is of general interest and possesses military-historical significance. The object has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of a political and military development. It has architectural-historical significance as a particular expression of a structural and typological development.
