Inleiding

Introduction

A pair of RUINS OF CASEMATES of the bridge or river casemate type, situated on the western bank of the Maas, built in 1936, according to plans from 1935, in preparation for defence against a strategic invasion from rearming Germany. The casemates are part of a series of such casemates along the major rivers. In total around forty such casemates were built, of which fewer than half remain. Taken together these casemates, all positioned to secure bridges and other river crossings, formed an effective system of defence centres to prevent easy crossing of the major rivers. The design of the casemates comes from the Central Inundation and Technical Bureau. The typology varies according to the terrain conditions and the specific task of each casemate. Both casemates were armed with a heavy machine gun and an anti-tank gun. Furthermore it is important that the casemates could deliver cross-fire in cooperation on the railway bridge and the blockade placed there against military vehicles. Such an arrangement with cross-fire, whereby each casemate was positioned at some distance north or south of the bridge, also occurred for example in Ravenstein. The situation in Beugen is the only one that remains recognizable. Both casemates played a very significant role in the fighting operations on the tenth of May 1940. From these casemates the railway bridge over the Maas had to be guarded against a strategic attack. Through neglect of Dutch defence a German armoured train succeeded in breaking through the line at this location and crossing both the Maas line and the more westerly Peel-Raam position. During the hours following the breakthrough fierce fighting took place for this location, to which the casemates still bear witness.

Description

The Oeffelt casemates are currently in ruined condition. This is caused on the one hand by mechanical damage as a result of shelling, and on the other hand as a result of demolition activities. Originally both fortifications had two storeys with a storage and living space below ground level and two fighting spaces above. The entrance is located on the gorge side, in the rear wall. In the reinforced concrete front wall, which had to withstand continuous shelling with 10.5 calibre grenades, the construction is particularly clearly legible, with heavy gun ports armoured by means of rail anchors. Due to damage various parts of the covering and walls have been weakened or even torn loose and collapsed. On both front facades are traces of impacts from machine-gun and artillery fire.

Valuation

The ruins of the bridge or river casemates are of general interest. The objects have cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of a political and military development. They have architectural-historical significance as a particular expression of a structural and typological development within fortification engineering. They have ensemble values because of their mutual interconnection and relation to the terrain and in particular the location of the bridge over the Maas.
