The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

On a partially moated site on the east side of the village centre of Boxmeer stands the former monastery "De Weijer", consisting of among other things an already protected dwelling house with an eighteenth-century inverted stepped gable, a dwelling house from 1719, both recently substantially renovated, and likewise an already protected two-storey transverse house, dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The protection is extended to the two-storey monastery building dating from circa 1930, adjoining the already protected section, with the refectory and the Neoromanesque cruciform chapel.

Description

The two-storey monastery building has a rectangular plan, with on the north side a slightly projecting transverse house, crowned by stepped gables. The building, partially cellared at the location of the buttresses, is covered by crossed gabled roofs, laid with improved Dutch tiles.

The building has a wooden gutter with substantial overhang.

The facades are built in brick. Against the western facade, situated at the former moat, at the level of the refectory three buttresses with triple slits have been installed, between which three pointed arch windows with concrete mullions and tracery in the fanlights. Below them three cellar windows, provided with anti-theft bars. On the upper storey above these three rectangular windows have been installed, provided with a concrete mullion and iron glazing bars. The 'transverse house' has on the moat side on the ground floor a composite three-part window with combined fanlight, consisting of 24 glass bricks.

Above it a high arched window, flanked by narrow side lights.

In the northern facade, with a substantial brick stepped gable, on the ground floor a round-arched opening, above which three narrow windows with concrete mullions and iron glazing bars. In the stepped gable three narrow and tall lights.

On the north-eastern corner a high brick chimney. The arrangement of the rear facade of the transverse house conforms to the front facade.

Valuation

The monastery building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of orders and congregations in the lordship of Boxmeer and the revival in the period after 1900. It is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the congregational monastery. It is of architectural-historical importance as a regional variant of the Amsterdam School. It has ensemble values as part of a valuable monastery complex with complicated construction history. It is also of importance in relation to the integrity of the surroundings.
