Inleiding
In 1877-1878 naar een ontwerp van A.L. van Gendt in de stijl van het Eclecticisme - met invloeden van de Neo -Renaissance - tot stand gekomen TONEELSCHOOL met inpandige conciërgewoning aan de Marnixstraat. In oorsprong bevonden zich op de verdieping drie leerzalen en een bescheiden toneelruimte; aan de achterzijde van het gebouw bevindt zich de verbindende gang en het trappenhuis. In 1949-1951 in opdracht van de Vereniging Nederlands Toneelverbond voor de Academie voor Dramatische Kunst, naar ontwerp van F. Huisman en Lau Peters uitgebreid met een achterliggende bebouwing tot de Singelgracht, waarbij het in oorsprong uitwendige trappenhuis werd ingebouwd en ook de nieuwe toneelzaal werd ingericht. Deze uitbreiding wordt niet van rijkswege beschermd; ook de brede dakkapel aan de achterzijde van de toneelschool valt buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving
De voormalige toneelschool is tot stand gekomen op een rechthoekig grondplan en heeft twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak met rechtsdekkende blauwgrijze pannen; het dakschild aan de zijde van Singelgracht heeft rode platte pannen. Gevels in bruinrode baksteen, waarbij de voor- en linkerzijgevel donker zijn gesausd. Vijf traveeën brede voorgevel op plint met ontluchtingsroosters. De gevelaccenten bij lisenen, vensters en toegangspartij, alsmede de gevelstenen zijn van zandsteen. De risalerende hoektraveeën worden geflankeerd door lisenen met middenaccent, fantasie-kapitelen en een verticale groef in het metselwerk. De middentravee heeft een portiek met toegangspartij met dubbele houten deur met smeedijzeren traliewerk voor de deurlichten en een drieruits bovenlicht. De zware latei is voorzien van inscriptie: TONEELSCHOOL. De vensters op de begane grond hebben zesruits ramen, waarboven een gevelsteen met attributen die met het toneelspel in verband staan. Een meanderende gevellijst scheidt begane grond en verdieping. De vensters van de verdieping zijn halfrond gesloten met boog met sluit- en aanzetstenen en geprofileerde lijst op kleine consoles en hebben zesruits ramen. Onder de geprofileerde kroonlist bevindt zich tussen de lisenen een keperboogfries. De middentravee wordt afgesloten door een uitkragende Vlaamse geven met tuit, muizentandlijst, hoge consoles en geleed spitsboogvenster. De twee dakkapellen hebben een dubbel draairaam, houten klauwstukken en een frontonvormige bekroning met schouders. De linkerzijgevel is blind; de rechterzijgevel sluit aan op de belending. De achtergevel heeft verdiept geplaatste vensters met draairamen onder licht getoogde strek, en muurankers. Boven de rechte gevelbeëindiging een dakkapel als genoemd.

A THEATRE SCHOOL created in 1877-1878 after a design by A.L. van Gendt in the style of Eclecticism - with influences of Neo-Renaissance - with an integrated caretaker's residence at the Marnixstraat. Originally the upper floor contained three teaching rooms and a modest theatre space; at the rear of the building is the connecting corridor and staircase. In 1949-1951 commissioned by the Vereniging Nederlands Toneelverbond for the Academie voor Dramatische Kunst, expanded according to a design by F. Huisman and Lau Peters with a rear building extension to the Singelgracht, whereby the originally external staircase was built in and the new theatre hall was also fitted out. Description
The former theatre school was created on a rectangular ground plan and has two storeys under a truncated hipped roof with right-covering blue-grey tiles; the roof slope on the Singelgracht side has red flat tiles. Facades in reddish-brown brick, with the front and left-side facades dark-sauced. Five-bay-wide front facade on plinth with ventilation grilles. Facade accents at pilasters, windows and entrance section, as well as facade stones are of sandstone. The projecting corner bays are flanked by pilasters with central accent, fantasy capitals and a vertical groove in the brickwork. The central bay has a portico with entrance section with double wooden door with wrought-iron lattice work for the door lights and a three-light fanlight. The heavy lintel is provided with the inscription: TONEELSCHOOL. The windows on the ground floor have six-light windows, above which a facade stone with attributes connected with theatrical performance. A meandering facade line separates ground floor and upper storey. The windows of the upper storey are semi-circular closed with arch with closing and setting stones and profiled moulding on small consoles and have six-light windows. Below the profiled cornice, between the pilasters is a herringbone-pattern arch frieze. The central bay is closed off by a projecting Flemish gable with spout, dentil moulding, high consoles and articulated pointed-arch window. The two roof dormers have a double casement window, wooden corner braces and a pediment-shaped crown with shoulders. The left-side facade is blank; the right-side facade adjoins the neighbouring building. The rear facade has recessed-set windows with casement windows under slightly arched span, and wall anchors. Above the straight facade termination a roof dormer as mentioned.
Valuation
Former theatre school from 1877-1878 of general importance because of its architectural-historical and typological value; of importance for the history of education in general and for that of art and theatre education in particular.
