Inleiding
Een in 1853 tot stand gekomen SCHOOL gebouwd in eclectische stijl, in oorsprong bestemd als ‘School voor Haveloozen’, ook ‘Eben/Haëzer-school’. In 1887 werd vergunning verstrekt tot de verbouw van het portiek. In 1914 werd in opdracht van 'De Inrichting voor Havelooze Kinderen' door de bouwmeester- en aannemersfirma O. Bunjes en Zoon een verbouwing doorgevoerd. Als functie-aanduiding werd nu 'schoolgebouw en een afzonderlijke onderwijzerswoning' gegeven. Op het open erf achter het schoolgebouw werd een kleine badkamer bijgebouwd.
Op de plattegrond werd de begane grond zowel voor als na de verbouwing van 1914 grotendeels door het speellokaal ingenomen. Op de verdieping oorspronkelijk drie grote schoollokalen en de bovenwoning. Na de verbouwing van 1914 werden op de verdieping de lokalen door plaatsing van tussenwanden vermeerderd en werden op de begane grond utilitaire ruimtes eveneens verbouwd tot schoollokaal. Een tweetal lantaarns of lichtkoepels zorgden voor een betere verlichting van de lokalen op de verdieping.
Omschrijving
Op een in hoofdzaak vliegervormig grondplan ontworpen en symmetrisch ingedeeld schoolgebouw met op de afgeschuinde hoek een hoog opgetrokken tuitgevel ter breedte van drie vensterassen, waarin de hoofdingang zich bevindt, geflankeerd door drie-assige lijstgevels. In het gebouw bestaat uit twee bouwlagen onder een combinatie van dakvormen gedekt met shingles. De gevels zijn overwegend witgepleisterd en hebben verschillende kleuraccenten. Gevels rusten op een omlopende hardstenen plint.
De gevel aan de zijde van de Lijnbaansgracht (ongd.) heeft aan de rechterzijde een licht risalerende muurdam over twee bouwlagen; in deze muurdam twee rechthoekige spaarvelden. Op de begane grond een drietal verdiept geplaatste vensters met zesruits schuifraam en tweeruits bovenlicht. Benedendorpel en lichte toging van een veld aan de bovenzijde. Over drie gevelvlakken omlopende geprofileerde en uitkragende cordonlijst; deze cordonlijst is in bruine kleur geschilderd. Boven deze cordonlijst zeer geringe enkelvoudige insnoering. Op het niveau van de verdieping een drietal vensters met zesruits benedenraam met vierruits tuimelraam boven het kalf, eveneens verdiept in een licht getoogde nis geplaatst. Benedendorpel. Kozijnen en roedenverdeling zijn groen geschilderd. Gevelbeëindiging met geprofileerde en in bruine kleur geschilderde uitkragende gootlijst. De in de gevelwand van de Bloemstraat geplaatste gevel is vrijwel identiek aan die aan de Lijnbaansgracht. Aan de linkerzijde is hier echter in de licht risalerende muurdam een eenvoudige en smalle houten toegangsdeur met lichten geplaatst. Verder in de muurdam geen spaarvelden.
Het afgeschuinde geveldeel op de hoek van de Lijnbaansgracht en de Bloemstraat is sterk symmetrisch en toont links en rechts een licht risalerende muurdam met verdiepte spaarvelden. Op de begane grond bevindt zich de centrale en iets verdiept geplaatste toegangspartij met dubbele houten paneeldeur met boven het kalf een dubbel bovenlicht met diagonale roedenverdeling. Links en rechts van deze toegang een groot schuifvenster in iets verdiepte nis. Benedendorpel, negenruits benedenraam en drieruits bovenlicht; verder een licht getoogd en geprofileerd veld aan de bovenzijde. Cordonlijst heeft boven de centrale toegangspartij een extra accentuering in de vorm van een verder uitkragende kroonlijst. Op de verdieping een tripartite vensterpartij opgebouwd uit een hoog toogvenster met een iets lager toogvenster aan weerszijden. Centrale venster heeft een 25- ruits roedenverdeling en een halfrond bovenlicht boven het kalf. Bovenlicht met gebogen en radiërende roedenverdeling. Vensters aan weerszijden hebben een 15-ruits roedenverdeling en een halfrond bovenlicht boven het kalf. Bovenlicht met gebogen en radiërende roedenverdeling. Gevelbeëindiging met stompe puntgevel met afgevlakte hoekpunten. Geprofileerde en uitkragende gootlijst. Hierop een geringe in de lijn van de gevelbeëindiging geplaatste voortzetting van het gevelvlak. Deze wordt met zink afgesloten en heeft in het midden een zeer lage tuit. In het gevelvlak boven de getoogde ramen van de verdieping verder nog een brede gevelsteen met tekst: Eben- Haëzer (=tot hiertoe heeft ons de Heer geholpen).
Waardering
Vroeg eclectisch schoolgebouw van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde. Tevens van belang wegens de sociaal-historische en typologische waarde als vroeg pioniersproject in het kader van de volksverheffing en verbetering van het onderwijs.
