Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the west side of the Marnixstraat at the Bullebaksluis, a POLICE STATION erected in 1888, named Raampoort, designed in Eclectic style - a mixture of neo-classical and medieval elements - by W. Springer on commission of the municipality of Amsterdam. N.B. The building was initially constructed as a police post office and bureau for the neighbourhood secretary. After the abolition of the neighbourhood secretariats in November 1898, the entire building was placed at the disposal of the police. In 1929 the building was extended by the addition of three adjoining plots on the Marnixstraat.
Description
A police station built on a rectangular ground plan. The building is constructed in red brick, rests on a sandstone plinth and consists of three storeys. The rear side on the Singelgracht also has three storeys but is situated one storey height below ground level and rests on a foundation in the water. On the front the building is eight window bays wide in an asymmetrical layout. The main entrance is situated in the middle window bay of the three-bay-wide risalit on the right side, which is covered by a hipped roof with black tiles. The middle window bay projects further, is built up higher and above eaves height is extended with a top provided with a crenellated straight finish with on either side hardstone crenellated 'arkel' turrets. Between them a facade stone bearing the coat of arms of Amsterdam (three St Andrew's crosses placed one below the other under a projecting crown). The round-arched recessed main entrance with panelled door is provided above the string course with a segmental sandstone pediment. The ground floor storey has decorative brickwork in dark-coloured painted brick, corniced around the round-arched window openings. The first floor is likewise provided with dark-coloured decorative brickwork around round-arched window openings. This also applies to the second floor but here the windows are smaller and coupled. The risalit is provided at the corners with 'arkel' turrets and below the eaves line with a sandstone arch frieze. The building is crowned by an octagonal tower under a pointed roof with a weather vane. The risalit on the rear is rounded, five window bays wide and provided with a crenellated walkway. The set-back building section has a flat roof and is five bays wide. All windows have sash windows with glazing bars and are provided with web-form subdivided fanlights.
Valuation
Police station of general importance due to cultural-historical value as well as architectural-historical value as a striking example of functional government architecture in the last quarter of the 19th century. Furthermore of importance in the oeuvre of W. Springer. The special urban planning location at the water of the Singelgracht is an important added value.
