Inleiding

Glas gezet in stalen patent raamprofielen.

Introduction

A CARE HOME for the Jewish community, built in two phases, in which physically disabled persons were prepared for reintegration into society and in which elderly persons were also cared for. The building, the former Joodsche Invalide, is located on the eastern corner of the Weesperplein and the Nieuwe Achtergracht. The first phase consists of part of the current buildings on the Nieuwe Achtergracht and was designed in 1915 as the Centraal Ziekenhuis Joodsche Invalide by H. Elte in a style in which influences of the brick architecture of the Amsterdam School as well as characteristics of the later New Building movement could be recognized. The building by Elte (old number 98) is incorporated into the buildings of the second phase: the renovation/extension by J.F. Staal from 1935-1937 in the style of the New Building movement. During execution, Staal was assisted by architect M. Oesterman. Of the building designed by Elte, part of the eastern facade on the Nieuwe Achtergracht remains, and - in layout - parts of the wing at right angles to the buildings on that canal, located on the inner courtyard of the home. These remains are difficult to identify, but can be traced as parts of what appears on Staal's design drawings as existing building. Staal carried out a thorough internal and external renovation of Elte's building in order to achieve a better distribution of utility spaces in the new whole. In doing so, he sought to place similar spaces with the same purpose one above the other where possible. On the Weesperplein, there was a synagogue on the ground floor, above which were a banqueting hall and a conversation room. Parts of a possibly wooden vault of the synagogue possibly remain under the current suspended ceiling. On the corner of the Weesperplein and the Nieuwe Achtergracht, there were common rooms on five storeys; these were connected to the bedrooms and sick wards of six storeys. On the corner building, under the curved roof - characteristic of 'Group 32' within the New Building movement - was the boardroom; this room is now known as the 'Staal Room'. The banqueting hall originally had a moveable floor that could be brought under an incline to provide a better view of the stage. In the original furnishing of the building, consideration was given to the different types of patients. The kitchens were fitted out according to Jewish ritual requirements. On the inner courtyard at the rear, there was originally an oval pond and a reserved space for the sukkah. A plaque by C. Stauthamer from 1950 next to the entrance on the Weesperplein commemorates the deportation of the Jewish residents in 1943. In 1979 the building was adapted for the GG & GD; vertical steel structures with galleries with railings were then added to the rear facades. Parts of the tilework of the facade cladding were replaced, as were some windows. The interior was substantially altered; some original interior components.

Description

The building, including older parts, was built on a U-shaped floor plan, under an arrangement of flat roofs and with a concrete frame with concrete floors. Glass facades alternate with facades with window series between which an external facade cladding of grey glazed tiles against a background of concrete work; the tiles are 12.5 by 25 cm and have dovetails on the back for good adhesion to the concrete structure. Also blind facades in yellow brick. The building has a long wing on the Nieuwe Achtergracht and a shorter wing on the Weesperplein; on the inner courtyard a narrower - and in its core older - wing at right angles against the eastern termination of the wing on the Nieuwe Achtergracht. The wing on the Nieuwe Achtergracht, like the one on the Weesperplein, has eight storeys above ground level and has long multi-paned window series. A set-back, lower facade section in reddish-brown brick - possibly a remnant of the buildings by H. Elte - has four storeys and windows with a more horizontal articulation with glazing bars and stone mullions. On this part of the wing, a storey was recently added (20th century). The left part of the wing, near a neighbouring building in Amsterdam School style, has nearly blind facades and a shallow rectangular glass bay over six storeys and a small semi-circular projection against the eighth storey of the eastern facade. Glass set in steel patent window frames. Under the glass bay there is an entrance. On the corner of Nieuwe Achtergracht and Weesperplein is a somewhat projecting and lower corner section with glass facades and a set-back crown with a room with rounded glass facade under a curved roof. The entire corner section gives the impression of being supported by slender columns. The glass facades connect to the walls clad with grey glazed tiles of the side facades, in which further on the long window series are placed. Besides the curved roof on the corner, the building has other decorative elements, such as the curved canopy above the entrance and the overhead round and articulated windows in the side facade. Steel window frames and penants of painted plasterwork. Entrance with originally a turnstile.

The wing on the Weesperplein has, to the right of the corner section, window series with eight window bays with smaller windows; this in relation to the spaces behind, which in contrast to those on the Nieuwe Achtergracht were not in use as sick wards or bedrooms, but as meeting or conversation rooms or as a synagogue. On the right on the ground floor of an adjacent plot, the passage through to the inner courtyard. The adjacent plot is not covered by this protection. Rear facades of the wings and the side facade of the building at right angles to the wing of the Nieuwe Achtergracht with partly original multi-paned windows with steel window frames and with partly fixed glass panels and casement windows.

Valuation

A care home for the Jewish community, built in 1935-1937, in which older buildings from 1915 are incorporated, of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value. The building is considered an example of the New Building movement. Of importance for the history of the Jewish community in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Of typological importance as an expression of a development in the construction of hospitals and care homes, in which special attention was paid to optimal access of light and air and to the functions and connection lines in the building coordinated with each other.
