Omschrijving
Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
A COMMERCIAL OFFICE/WAREHOUSE called 'Bestevaer' built in 1914, designed in traditionalist style by architect J.J. Kanters. Built on behalf of the N.V. Company for the exploitation of the 'Bestevaer' property).
NB. In 1929 renovation took place by architects H.A.J. and J. Baanders, in which the building was partially raised at the rear with a third storey and the left part of the second storey was modified. Windows were also adapted and roof lights added. Minor alterations in 1939 and 1948.
Description
The office building/warehouse is constructed of a reinforced concrete frame with concrete floors on an almost square ground plan. The building is fully cellared and has a low ground floor, one storey, and a second storey partly situated in the roof. Unequal-sided gabled roof as transverse roof structure with steep gable with tiles at the De Ruijterkade and rear assembly of flat roofs. The masonry asymmetrical front facade has on the right side a gable with recessed roof and alongside a lower cornice-topped facade, interrupted by a roof dormer. The facade is articulated by two substantial oriels at the level of the storey beneath which is a double entrance door for the original warehouse function on the ground floor. Between these is located the entrance to the offices on the storey above. The facade has a profiled natural stone plinth and likewise lintels above the windows, facade bands, door surrounds and consoles and pilasters and accents at the oriels. The frieze has consoles and a profiled drip moulding and higher raised balustrade with square piers with projecting coping. Above the main entrance - behind which is the staircase to the office building - with short stair, double oak doors with lights and projecting natural stone pediment with sculpture in the tympanum and with 'BESTEVAER' on the frieze. The left oriel is now covered by the extension of the roof gable, in which recent roof dormer, the original balustrade has been removed here. Above the main entrance two window arrangements treated as cross windows with masonry transom and centre mullion. On the right and left sides a tall two-part stacked window. On the right side roof gable with windows and glass doors opening onto balcony with natural stone balustrade on the oriel.
Interior. The ground floor originally served as a wine warehouse. The monumental staircase is clad in red-white-grey and black-white veined marble. The stair leads to the more representational rooms on the first storey. The stair railings are copper, the treads granite. On the first storey a sandstone balustrade and granito floors. Tile panel of the 'VII-Provinciën' of Admiral De Ruijter. The plan of the first storey is symmetrical around the staircase with classicistically decorated walls with moulding and niches and coffered ceiling with stucco. The teak doors have marble surrounds. In the two front rooms two short oak spiral stairs lead to hanging rooms, of which one now remains. The oak bay window has small leaded-glass windows and decoration in the neo-Renaissance manner. Left and right at the front two identical rooms with stucco ceilings. The wainscoting below the windows has been removed. In the left room the double doors with the leaded-glass fanlights remain. In the right room the black marble fireplace is still present. Further a narrow stair ending in a wooden baluster and stairs to the intermediate storey. A separate staircase tiled with yellow and black tiles adjoining the large stair hall leads to the second storey. The main staircase is lit by a large rectangular lantern with large oval and convex centre section with leaded-glass window filling.
Valuation
Commercial office/warehouse from 1914 of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical and typological value. The particular internal division and the rich interior form important added values.
