Inleiding
Op de hoek van Sarphatistraat en Korte 's-Gravesandestraat in 1873-75 tot stand gekomen 'RIJKSGOEDERENMAGAZIJN voor Kleeding en Uitrusting' naar een ontwerp in Neo-Classicistische trant in opdracht van het toenmalige Departement van Oorlog. De uitvoering stond onder directie van de Commandant der Genie in de 3e Stelling. Na de aanleg van de Korte 's-Gravesandestraat werd daaraan in 1883 een magazijnmeesterswoning met bergplaats gebouwd naar ontwerp van de Eerstaanwezend Ingenieur der Genie, majoor H.F. Schalken in een sobere eclectische trant. De woning en berging liggen ten zuiden van het hoofdgebouw en vallen niet onder de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekige, langgerekte en geheel symmetrisch ingedeelde plattegrond tot stand gekomen magazijngebouw bestaande uit drie bouwlagen op een hardstenen plint onder een samenstel van schilddaken bedekt met pannen. Het gebouw is in baksteen opgetrokken met natuurstenen cordonlijsten onder de vensters en wordt afgesloten door een omlopende kroonlijst. Het gebouw telt negentien vensterassen en is voorzien van een middenrisaliet en hoekrisalien ter breedte van drie vensterassen die door een fronton worden bekroond. In het middelste fronton is het gepolychromeerde rijkswapen met gekroonde leeuwen aangebracht; de frontons van de hoekrisalieten bevatten ronder vensters met vierruitsverdeling. In de risalieten een centrale ingangspartij met halfrond bovenlicht, bij de zijingangen met een diamantkop. Beneden is gebruik gemaakt van rondboogvensters (thans voorzien van traliewerk) en op de verdiepingen van getoogde vensters met kleine roedenverdeling. De hoekbosseringen, banden en frontons zijn gepleisterd. De hoofdingang is voorzien van een natuurstenen omlijsting met rusticawerk en Dorische pilasters.
Zijgevels en achtergevel identieke gevelopbouw en detaillering.
INWENDIG resteert alleen nog de oorspronkelijke kapconstructie, samengesteld uit houten spanten en ijzeren vakwerk.
Waardering
Voormalig Rijkskledingmagazijn van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en militairhistorische alsmede de stedebouwkundige waarde. Het gebouw is door zijn symmetrische opzet en door het gebruik van de Neo-Classicistische vormentaal met zware risalieten, frontons, cordon- en kroonlijsten, halfronde en getoogde vensters met kleine roedenverdeling en functionele decoratie alsmede de kapconstructie kenmerkend voor de midden 19de-eeuwse utiliteitsbouw van de Genie. Tevens van belang vanwege de situering aan de binnenstadszijde van de Singelgracht als onderdeel van een grotere reeks militaire gebouwen, als zodanig bovendien mede van belang wegens de uitdrukking van de functie van garnizoenstad en van Nationaal Reduit.

Introduction
At the corner of Sarphatistraat and Korte 's-Gravesandestraat, built in 1873-75, a 'RIJKSGOEDERENMAGAZIJN for Clothing and Equipment' in Neo-Classical style was constructed on commission of the then Department of War. Execution was under the direction of the Commandant of Engineers in the 3rd Fortification Line. After the construction of Korte 's-Gravesandestraat, a storekeeper's dwelling with storage space was built there in 1883 according to a design by the Chief Engineer of the Engineer Corps, Major H.F. Schalken, in a sober eclectic style. The dwelling and storage lie to the south of the main building and are not subject to protection.
Description
A storehouse building constructed on a rectangular, elongated and fully symmetrically planned ground plan consisting of three storeys on a hardstone plinth under an arrangement of hipped roofs covered with tiles. The building is constructed in brick with natural stone drip mouldings below the windows and is terminated by a running cornice. The building has nineteen window bays and is provided with a central risalit and corner risalits measuring three window bays wide, which are crowned by a pediment. In the central pediment the polychrome royal coat of arms with crowned lions is displayed; the pediments of the corner risalits contain round windows with four-pane glazing. In the risalits a central entrance with semicircular fanlight, at the side entrances with a diamond head. Below, round-arched windows are used (now fitted with grilles) and on the storeys mullioned windows with small glazing bars. The corner rustications, bands and pediments are plastered. The main entrance is provided with a natural stone surround with rusticated work and Doric pilasters.

INTERNALLY only the original roof truss structure remains, composed of wooden principals and ironwork bracing.
Valuation
Former Royal Clothing Store of general importance due to its architectural and military historical as well as urban planning value. The building is characteristic of mid-19th-century utilitarian construction by the Engineer Corps through its symmetrical layout and the use of Neo-Classical formal language with heavy risalits, pediments, drip mouldings and cornices, semicircular and mullioned windows with small glazing bars and functional decoration as well as the roof truss structure. Also of importance due to its location on the inner-city side of the Singelgracht as part of a larger series of military buildings, and in this respect also of importance for the expression of the function of garrison town and National Redoubt.
