Inleiding
SOCIETEITS- of VERENIGINGSGEBOUW, genaamd 'Plancius' een in eclectische trant naar ontwerp van N. Vos met medewerking van J. Galman in 1874-1876 gebouwd voor de Stichting van de Liederentafel 'Oefening baart Kunst', een overwegend Joodse mannenzangvereniging. Hieraan herinnert de Davidsster in het timpaan. In het verenigingsgebouw bevond zich destijds een concertzaal met 1000 zitplaatsen. Het gebouw fungeerde tevens als vergaderruimte voor de arbeidersbeweging.
Omschrijving
Het Planciusgebouw bestaat uit een groot witgepleisterd middendeel van vijf traveeën breed en over de volle breedte bekroond door een fronton. Aan weerszijden hiervan staat een één travee breed bouwdeel in schoon metselwerk. Het geheel is drie bouwlagen hoog, waarbij de derde bouwlaag met plat dak van de zijdelen later is toegevoegd. Het middendeel is desondanks toch iets hoger. Hierop staat een zadeldak met op het schild een hoge gemetselde schoorsteen met trekstangen. De grijs gepleisterde zijgevels zijn blind. De begane grond van het middendeel wordt ingenomen door drie deuren. De middelste, kleinste deur is terugliggend geplaats in een rondboogvormige omlijsting en is voorzien van een geleed bovenlicht. In de stucdecoratie om deze deur is het wapen van Amsterdam aangebracht. De twee buitenste deuren zijn dubbele inrijdeuren binnen een omlijsting in de vorm van een korfboog. Beide zijn eveneens voorzien van een geleed bovenlicht. Op de beide verdiepingen bevinden zich roedeverdeelde dubbele draairamen. Het middendeel is voorzien van een uitvoerige stucwerkdecoratie met onder andere gebosseerd werk op de begane grond, water- en cordonlijsten op alle verdiepingen, zijpilasters en vensteromlijsting op de verdiepingen, waarbij het accent op de eerste verdieping ligt. Hier aan weerszijden van het middelste venster tevens cassettes en trofeeën als veldvulling. Het afsluitende timpaan heeft een door voluten gedragen kroonlijst. De vulling van het veld bestaat uit lijstwerk met in het midden de Davidster met daaronder de naam 'PLANCIUS'. De smalle zijdelen worden geleed door cordonlijsten die doorlopen in die van het midden deel, verder sier metselwerk rond de vensters en deurpartijen.
Waardering
Verenigingsgebouw Plancius in eclectische trant van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde, alsook wegens de verbondenheid met de Joodse bevolking en de arbeidersbeweging. Tevens van belang wegens zijn ensemble waarde als representant van een in de Plantage veel voorkomende groep van gebouwen uitgevoerd in de pleisterarchitectuur uit het derde kwart van de negentiende eeuw.

SOCIETIES or ASSOCIATION BUILDING, named 'Plancius' an eclectic building erected to the design of N. Vos with the collaboration of J. Galman in 1874-1876 for the Foundation of the Men's Singing Society 'Oefening baart Kunst', a predominantly Jewish male choir. The Star of David in the tympanum recalls this. The association building once contained a concert hall with 1000 seats. The building also served as a meeting place for the labour movement.
Description
The Plancius building consists of a large whitewashed central section five bays wide and crowned across its full width by a pediment. On either side of this stands a building component one bay wide in exposed brickwork. The whole is three storeys high, with the third storey with flat roof of the side sections added later. The central section is nonetheless somewhat higher. Above it stands a gabled roof with a high brick chimney with tie rods on the pitch. The grey plastered end walls are blank. The ground floor of the central section is taken up by three doors. The middle, smallest door is set back in a round-arched surround and is provided with a leaded fanlight. In the stucco decoration around this door the coat of arms of Amsterdam is applied. The two outer doors are double carriage doors within a surround in the form of a basket arch. Both are likewise provided with a leaded fanlight. On the two upper floors are glazed bars double casement windows. The central section is provided with elaborate stucco decoration including boshed work on the ground floor, drip mouldings and cordon lines on all storeys, side pilasters and window surrounds on the upper floors, with emphasis on the first floor. Here on either side of the middle window also cassettes and trophies as field filling. The enclosing tympanum has a cornice carried by volutes. The field filling consists of moulding work with in the centre the Star of David with below it the name 'PLANCIUS'. The narrow side sections are articulated by cordon lines which continue those of the central section, further ornamental brickwork around the windows and door areas.
Evaluation
Association building Plancius in eclectic style of general significance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as because of its connection with the Jewish population and the labour movement. Also of importance because of its ensemble value as a representative of a group of buildings frequently found in the Plantage executed in stucco architecture from the third quarter of the nineteenth century.
