Inleiding

Introduction

In 1868 an OFFICE BUILDING (2) designed by architect G.B. Salm in eclectic style on behalf of Natura Artis Magistra, the so-called 'Members' Premises' and main building of the Artis complex. In later times the building served as a zoological museum. The building is situated in the SW corner of the Artis complex, located at the intersection of Plantage Kerklaan and Plantage Middenlaan. From 1941 to 1968 the building was in use as a population register; during the attack by the resistance group of Gerrit van der Veen in 1943 the building lost its upper storey.

Description

The building consists of two rectangular pavilions built of brick, which are connected to each other by a lower gallery. On the garden side the windows and doors could be opened. Both pavilions have a basement with two storeys above it and a hipped roof with tiles, rafters and finials. The front facade is three, the side facade five window bays wide. The two storeys are separated by a profiled moulding. On the corners are plastered pilasters which are rusticated on the ground floor. On the first floor the central window on both the front facade and side facade is provided with ornaments in classical style. On the bel-étage the brickwork alternates with courses in yellow brick. Decorated cornice with unfinished frieze and with modillions at the capitals of the corner pilasters. The gallery has besides a projecting entrance section ten wide and two narrower bays. The facade is articulated vertically by plastered pilasters under a similar moulding with a frieze with white-painted panels with diamond-topped studs. Above the pilasters larger white-painted diamond-topped studs. Articulated windows and semicircular stoop with three steps. On the garden side there is a veranda. Facades partly on brick base with red and yellow brick in geometric motifs. Upon this high and wide articulated windows. All under a lean-to roof with shallow pitch and bituminous covering. On the left side the windows still have the vertically articulated fanlights with rounded corners. Elegant wooden posts with profiling and with corbel pieces and beam ends at the wide overhang. Simple wind braces. Both left and right wide and high multiply articulated entrance doors. In the middle two rectangular outbuildings with articulated entrance doors and windows and with raised roofline on corbels and with white-painted profiled superstructure.

In the interior of the pavilion on the left side the original stairwell with wall panelling is still present.

Valuation

Office building, so-called 'Members' Premises' in eclectic style from 1868 of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value and as a historical-functional component of the Artis complex. Also of importance because of the historical memory of the resistance action from the Second World War.
