Omschrijving

- ingang met tegeltableaux;

- centrale hal met gangen over alle bouwlagen;

- bestuurskamer op de hoofdverdieping;

- de mansardekap.

Description

Realized on a rectangular ground plan, constructed partly in red and yellow brick and partly in natural stone, a school consisting of three storeys under a mansard roof covered with slate and with a decorated cornice, the latter provided at the lower side with mutules. The building stands on a natural stone basement and is entirely cellar-vaulted. The ground floor is executed in natural stone provided with horizontal grooves. The broad front facade on the Raamplein consists of a central risalit and two corner risalits, all executed in yellow masonry and crowned with an aedicula placed above the cornice, an assembly of pilasters, entablature, pediment, balusters and ornamental consoles. The risalits are all covered by a transversely placed mansard roof. In the central risalit at the level of the ground floor is the round-arched entrance between two natural stone Tuscan half-columns. Above the entrance on the cornice painted in black letters: HOGESCHOOL VOOR ECONOMISCHE STUDIES. Above the inward-facing wooden and glazed access door a round-arched fanlight subdivided by similarly round-arched glazing bars. On either side of the portal a recessed four-pane window. At the level of the first and second storey the central risalit is at the corners provided with half-pilasters, executed in the Colossal order. On the first storey, above the entrance, a natural stone balcony with likewise natural stone pierced balustrade. Two balcony doors (with above them fanlights subdivided into three parts by glazing bars) and on either side thereof a window (now with only fanlight), all separated from each other by small, natural stone half-columns. On the second storey in the centre two six-pane windows. Further identical to first storey. In the aedicula two round-arched, subdivided six-fold by glazing bars, windows. The pediment is crowned by a gilt-painted eagle. The two corner risalits are identical to the central risalit with the exception of the eagle (here replaced by natural stone crosses) and the absence of balconies and balcony windows; the windows here are the same as those on the second storey. The wall surfaces between the risalits are on the first and second storey executed in red brick, surrounding the inward-facing windows – which on the first storey are rectangular and on the second round-arched – in yellow brick. In the roof storey four small roof dormer windows. The facade on the Passeerdersgracht has on the right a corner risalit and to its left three window bays similar to the front facade.

The side facade on the Raamstraat (that is the right side facade) is executed very soberly and is constructed of dark brown brick. This likewise applies to the rear. This further consists of three projecting sections under a flat roof. In the right, wall surface between two projections is located a large access door to the courtyard. In the rear facade the usually large windows are further regularly placed in the facade and for the most part subdivided by glazing bars.

INTERIOR. The interior is a good and clear reflection of the classical symmetrical articulation of the front facade. Monumental central hall, provided with columns and running out on either side into corridors, in which respectively two small stairwells are incorporated. The doors in the corridors still possess the original framing. All of this strictly symmetrically ordered. This latter also applies to the tiled floors, executed in ochre, black and red. The use of various natural stone gives the main floor extra allure. Also noteworthy are the two full-wall tile tableaux in the vestibule and originating from the Rozenburg factory, depicting 'The House with the Heads' at Keizersgracht 123, the first location of the school (left) and the building on the Raamplein (right).

Further, ceiling and wainscoting in the current board room on the main floor are still contemporary. Barrel vaults furthermore in the corridors. The monumentality of the hall and corridors continues to a lesser extent on the first and second storey, entirely in accordance moreover with the exterior, where likewise the upper storeys are formed less exuberantly.

Valuation Public Commercial School in neo-classical style with associated interior of general importance because of the architectural historical value. Also of importance as part of a school complex consisting of multiple buildings. Furthermore of importance because of the interior of which among others the following components can be considered as valuable:

- entrance with tile tableaux;

- central hall with corridors over all storeys;

- board room on the main floor;

- the mansard roof.
