Inleiding
PAKHUIS, gelegen aan de veldzijde van de voormalige vestingwerken aan de -tegenwoordig bebouwde- doorgaande weg tussen Ravenstein en Huisseling. Het relatief lange, smalle en hoge bedrijfsgebouw werd omstreeks 1915 door de Noordbrabantse Christelijke Boerenbond gebouwd en heeft onder meer gefunctioneerd als meelfabriek.
Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog is de pui van de straatgevel deels gewijzigd en er is een tweelaags winkelpand tegen de zuidelijke gevel gebouwd. Het pakhuis wordt tegenwoordig door de N.C.B. gebruikt voor opslag.
Omschrijving
Blijkens de geschilderde tekst in de topgevel van de westelijke straatgevel: 'Coöperatieve Handelsvereeniging N.C.B. Bijkantoor Ravenstein' betreft het hier een agrarisch-industrieel bedrijfsgebouw. De karakteristieke hoofdvorm van twee bouwlagen onder zadeldak wordt geaccentueerd door de beide dakkapellen, die ter hoogte van de eindgevels op het zadeldak (belegd met verbeterde Hollandse pannen) zijn geplaatst, mogelijk ten behoeve van de hijsinstallaties. De hoge bakstenen gevels (in het bijzonder de noordelijke) zijn geleed door sobere bakstenen pilasters, banden, tand- en muizetandlijsten. Een deel van de terugliggende gevelvelden is gepleisterd en witgeschilderd. In de zuidelijke gevel bevindt zich een aanbindring voor vee. De westelijke gevel heeft boven de inrijpoorten een houten luifel. Op de noordelijke gevel na bevinden zich in alle gevels vierruits vensters. De hoogte waarop deze vensters zijn aangebracht, alsmede de aanwezigheid van muurankers in de zuidelijke gevel, lijken er op te wijzen dat het gebouw oorspronkelijk verschillende verdiepingen heeft gehad.
Na de sluiting van de fabriek zijn verschillende tussenvloeren weggehaald. Momenteel kijkt men binnen in het gebouw tegen de deels profielijzeren, deels houten kapconstructie met hangwerk aan. De eigenlijke zolder was door de aanwezigheid van de hangstijlen nauwelijks bruikbaar.
Waardering
Het bedrijfsgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als herinnering aan de sociaal-economische geschiedenis van de provincie, het getuigt van de emancipatie van de katholieke Brabantse boer, het ontstaan van de standsorganisatie N.C.B. en de ontwikkeling van een doelmatiger agrarische bedrijfsvoering. Verder is het gebouw typologisch van belang. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als een goed en redelijk gaaf voorbeeld van een volgens traditionele technieken gebouwd pakhuis, dat door de opvallende gevels een belangrijke rol speelt in het aanzien van de stad. Introduction
WAREHOUSE, situated on the field side of the former fortifications at the -now built-up- through road between Ravenstein and Huisseling. The relatively long, narrow and high industrial building was built around 1915 by the Noord-Brabant Christian Farmers' Association and has functioned, among other things, as a flour mill.
After the Second World War, the facade of the street frontage was partly altered and a two-storey shop building was constructed against the southern gable. The warehouse is currently used by the N.C.B. for storage.
Description
According to the painted text in the top gable of the western street facade: 'Cooperative Commercial Association N.C.B. Branch Office Ravenstein', this is an agricultural-industrial business building. The characteristic main form of two storeys under a gabled roof is accentuated by both roof dormers, which are positioned at the level of the end gables on the gabled roof (covered with improved Dutch tiles), possibly for the benefit of hoisting installations. The high brick facades (in particular the northern one) are articulated by sober brick pilasters, bands, dentil and saw-tooth mouldings. Part of the recessed facade panels is plastered and whitewashed. In the southern gable there is a cattle tether ring. The western gable has a wooden canopy above the cart entrances. Apart from the northern gable, all facades have four-pane windows. The height at which these windows are positioned, as well as the presence of ornamental wall anchors in the southern gable, suggest that the building originally had several storeys.
After the closure of the factory, various intermediate floors were removed. Currently one looks inside the building at the roof truss structure, which is partly of profiled iron, partly of wood, with hanging straps. The actual loft was barely usable owing to the presence of the hanging posts.
Valuation
The business building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a reminder of the socio-economic history of the province, it testifies to the emancipation of the Catholic Brabant farmer, the formation of the N.C.B. occupational organisation and the development of more efficient agricultural management. Furthermore, the building is of typological importance. It has architectural-historical value as a good and reasonably intact example of a warehouse built according to traditional techniques, which, by virtue of its striking facades, plays an important role in the appearance of the town. It has ensemble values owing to its location near the former fortification grounds, at the edge of the historic town centre.
