Inleiding
De voormalige BROUWERIJ annex WOONHUIS 'De Gerstaar' dateert uit omstreeks 1900 en heeft neo-romaanse elementen. De eigenaar van de Gerstaar, L. van den Oever, woonde in het naast de brouwerij gelegen, van rijkswege uit beschermde patriciërshuis. De brouwerij fungeert tegenwoordig als woonhuis. Het gebouw is gelegen naast de Maasdijk.
Omschrijving
De eenlaags brouwerij ligt aan twee zijden ingesloten door bebouwing, heeft een langgerekte rechthoekige plattegrond en een eenvoudige, in baksteen opgetrokken gevel onder zadeldak. De begane grond heeft centraal een via een tree bereikbare ingangspartij met boven een hardstenen latei een halfrond, met glas-in-lood gevuld bovenlicht. Daaronder is a-symmetrisch naast een tweedelig zijlicht een neogotische paneeldeur met vierpassen geplaatst: deze situatie wijkt af van de oorspronkelijke. Ter weerszijden van de ingangspartij zijn gekoppelde, smalle openslaande vensters onder gemetselde segmentbogen geplaatst. De raamindeling van het onderlicht is vereenvoudigd door de verwijdering van een regel. In de topgevel is een dergelijk venster aangebracht, ditmaal met de oorspronkelijke raamindeling.
De voormalige functie van het pand blijkt niet alleen uit de op de gevel in gepleisterde velden aangebrachte inscriptie "Bierbrouwerij" "De Gerstaar", maar ook de hoge kelderverdieping, waarvan de vier kelderlichten door diefijzers zijn beschermd. In de achtergevel zijn de lage, met vensters gedichte lichten van de voormalige moutzolder zichtbaar.
Waardering
De voormalige brouwerij annex woonhuis is van algemeen belang.
Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van de nijverheid en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de bierbrouwerij. Het is architectuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de stijl en de ornamentiek en als voorbeeld van een representatieve bedrijfsgevel met karakteristieke opschriften. The former BREWERY together with DWELLING HOUSE 'De Gerstaar' dates from around 1900 and has neo-Romanesque elements. The owner of the Gerstaar, L. van den Oever, lived in the patrician house situated next to the brewery, which is protected by national monument designation. The brewery currently functions as a dwelling house. The building is located next to the Maasdijk.
Description
The single-storey brewery is enclosed on two sides by other buildings, has an elongated rectangular floor plan and a simple facade built in brick under a gabled roof. The ground floor has centrally an entrance area accessed by a step with above a sandstone lintel a semicircular fanlight filled with leaded glass. Below it, asymmetrically next to a two-part side light, a neo-gothic panel door with quatrefoils has been placed: this arrangement differs from the original. On either side of the entrance area, coupled, narrow casement windows under built segmental arches are placed. The glazing bar arrangement of the lower light has been simplified by the removal of a bar. In the gable is a similar window, this time with the original glazing bar arrangement.
The former function of the building is evident not only from the inscription "Bierbrouwerij" "De Gerstaar" applied to the facade in plastered panels, but also from the high basement storey, the four basement lights of which are protected by theft bars. In the rear facade the low lights of the former malt loft, fitted with windows, are visible.
Valuation
The former brewery together with dwelling house is of general importance.
