Inleiding
CAFÉ-WOONHUIS 't Pumpke is binnendijks tegen de Maasdijk gelegen, aan de route tussen de kom van de voormalige vestingstad en de tot 1975 (toen de nieuwe, oostelijk gelegen snelwegbrug gereed kwam) in bedrijf zijnde veerpont naar Niftrik. Het blokvormige pand dateert uit het midden van de negentiende eeuw maar heeft, blijkens muurresten in het interieur, een oudere kern. Aan de zuidoostelijke zijde een tweelaags aanbouw uit ca. 1880. Omstreeks 1960 is aan de oostelijke zijde een aanbouw opgetrokken.
De buitenmuur van het oude café-gedeelte is aan de zijde van de nieuwbouw doorgebroken.
Omschrijving
Het anderhalflaags object heeft een onregelmatige plattegrond, aangepast aan het tracé van de dijk en de Walstraat. Daardoor zijn ook de straatgevels niet recht. Deze zijn gecementeerd en gevoegd in imitatie-natuursteenverband en hebben een rood geschilderde voeg. In de zuidgevel, aan de zijde van de Maas, heeft het pand vijf vensterassen, twee iets uitspringende hoekpilasters en wordt de gevel afgesloten met een kroonlijst. Centraal is de ingangspartij met pilasteromlijsting, neo-gotische ornamentiek en bovenlicht aangebracht. Alle vensters hebben T-ramen. Dat geldt ook voor de vier vensters in de westelijke gevel. In de zuidgevel zijn drie aanbindringen voor vee aangebracht. Ook de vorm van het geknikte schilddak is onregelmatig. Achter het forse overstek met geschulpte windveer gaat de kroonlijst schuil. De tweelaags handvorm bakstenen achteraanbouw onder zadeldak heeft een hoge kelderverdieping, geschoord door zware bakstenen steunberen. Aan de oostelijke zijde bevindt zich een tweelicht met zware diefijzers.
Waardering
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-ecomomische ontwikkeling van het rivierengebied, namelijk de stichting van herbergen aan de dijk, nabij de plaats van de veerpont aan de stadsrand, het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het café-woonhuis. Het object is van architectuurhistorisch belang door de sobere stijl en detaillering. Het verkrijgt ensemblewaarden door de situering aan de dijk, nabij de historische stadskern. Het is tevens van belang vanwege de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur.

CAFÉ-DWELLING 't Pumpke is situated within the dike against the Maasdijk, on the route between the centre of the former fortified city and the ferry to Niftrik which operated until 1975 (when the new, easterly located motorway bridge was completed). The block-shaped building dates from the middle of the nineteenth century but has, as evidenced by wall remains in the interior, an older core. On the south-eastern side a two-storey extension from ca. 1880. Around 1960 an extension was built on the eastern side.
The outer wall of the old café section has been broken through on the side of the new building.
Description
The one-and-a-half storey object has an irregular floor plan, adapted to the line of the dike and Walstraat. This is why the street facades are not straight either. These are cemented and jointed in imitation natural stone bond with red-painted pointing. In the south facade, on the Maas side, the building has five window bays, two slightly projecting corner pilasters, and is terminated by a cornice. Centrally placed is the entrance section with pilaster framing, neo-gothic ornamentation and fanlight. All windows have T-frames. This also applies to the four windows in the western facade. In the south facade three cattle tethering rings are fitted. The form of the bent hipped roof is also irregular. Behind the substantial overhang with scrolled wind brace the cornice is concealed. The two-storey hand-formed brick rear extension under gabled roof has a high basement storey, braced by heavy brick buttresses. On the eastern side is a two-light window with heavy shutter bars.
Valuation
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic development of the river region, namely the establishment of inns along the dike, near the location of the ferry at the edge of the town, and is also of significance as an example of the typological development of the café-dwelling. The object has architectural-historical significance through its restrained style and detailing. It acquires ensemble values through its location on the dike, near the historic town centre. It is also of significance because of the architectural integrity of its exterior.
