Inleiding

Introduction

The R.C. SINT LAMBERTUSKERK is an oriented single-aisle church with transept, lower five-sided closed apse and north-eastern tower placed against the choir. This austere neo-Gothic church, centrally located in the village, was designed by C. Franssen in 1906 (built 1911-'12) as a replacement for a church building from 1626, which had been enlarged in 1852. The church forms a characteristic group with the parsonage Grotestraat 58 and surrounding farmhouses.

Description

The austere brick facades of the nave, which has three bays, are articulated by pilasters and a herringbone-pattern brick frieze. In each bay a pair of coupled lancet windows are placed. The richer apse is decorated with ashlar with moulded profiles, herringbone-pattern brick frieze and dog-tooth moulding and has lancet windows. All windows are filled with stained glass panels. The transept facades and the west gable both have pointed arch friezes, while the gable tops are provided with pointed arch blind niches. The western round-arched portal has a battened hinged door with wrought iron fittings. On the boogveld executed in limestone the Alpha and Omega symbols are carved. A flaming cross displays the IHS symbol.

Above the portal three coupled lancet windows. In the gable two empty niches with worked limestone corbels. The gabled roofs, on which a roof turret with wrought iron cross and neo-Gothic roof dormers, are laid with slate in Maastricht bond. The tower consists of three storeys, is articulated by bands, pointed arch friezes and pilasters, has a steep square pyramidal roof and is provided on all sides with two louvers, above which a clock.

In the northern tower wall a moulded ashlar pointed-arched portal, in the eastern wall a window with wall anchors. In the interior various movable objects which are listed on the National Monuments Register (octagonal hard stone baptismal font 15th-16th centuries, confessional composed from fragments 17th-18th centuries, pulpit and oak bench, wooden Sint Eligius figure 16th century, wooden Pietà 16th century, two bells, cast in 1699 by Johan Fremy).
