Inleiding
BESCHUITFABRIEK uit 1927, deel uitmakend van het fabriekscomplex "Verkade" en gesitueerd op het bedrijfsterrein tussen Westzijde en Vaart. De beschuitfabriek is gebouwd naar ontwerp van P. Molenaar in een aan de Amsterdamse School verwante zakelijk-expressionistische bouwtrant. De langgerekte vorm van het bouwterrein en de fabriek - ingeklemd tussen Hollandse Pad en de Reigerstraat vloeit voort uit en herinnert aan de typisch Zaanse haaks op de rivier gerichte padenstructuur waarvan het Ossepad deel uitmaakte. De beschuitfabriek strekt zich uit in westelijke richting achter de bebouwing aan de Westzijde. De oostelijke kopgevel ligt aan het zogenaamde Ruyterplein, langs de noordgevel loopt de Jan Rotstraat, de zuidgevel grenst aan de achterzijde van de bebouwing aan de Reigerstraat en de westgevel grenst aan een open terrein. In 1936 werd op de bovenverdieping het hoofdkantoor ondergebracht.
Omschrijving
Beschuitfabriek op rechthoekig grondplan, grotendeels bestaande uit twee bouwlagen onder plat dak, aan de oostkant deels met sheddak. Het gebouw heeft aan de noordzijde een representatieve middenpartij ten behoeve van het trappenhuis. Deze middenpartij heeft drie bouwlagen. Een enkele bouwlaag onder sheddak kent het gebouw aan de achterzijde (zuidkant) aan weerszijden van een tweelaags middenpartij (kantoor onder flauwhellend zadeldak). Het gebouw is uitgevoerd met plastisch vormgegeven bakstenen gevels, betonnen detaillering, en reeksen brede rechthoekige stalen meerruits vensters. Het metselwerk is uitgevoerd in drie kleuren baksteen: hoofdzakelijk gele baksteen in staand verband, met rode baksteen in kruisverband de licht teruggemetselde plint en paars in de borstwering. Het platvolle voegwerk is aangepast aan deze kleuren. Het metselwerk van de vlakke gevels is deels versierd met in- en uitspringende banden. Doorgaande betonnen lijsten direct boven de vensters markeren de vloeren, de bovenste lijst heeft betonnen vergaarbakken. Onderlangs de vensters is een doorgaande waterlijst van hardgebakken tegels. De gevel is afgesloten met een getande betonnen deklijst, die op meerdere plaatsen (hoekaccenten) wordt doorbroken door uitgemetselde, hoog opgaande schoorstenen met betonnen dekstukken.
Aan de oostgevel bevindt zich een betonnen laadplatform onder dito luifel met draadglas. Links hiervan een kleine halfronde uitbouw (toiletruimten) met afgeronde betonnen daklijst. Aan de rechterkant van de gevel een voorsprong met afgeronde hoeken, met in de linker binnenhoek de aanzet van een smalle rechthoekige, hoge schoorsteen. Genoemd platform is voorzien van een halfronde ijzeren stootrand, die zich voortzet tot om de afgeronde rechterhoek.
De lange noordgevel heeft in beide bouwlagen een lange reeks vensters als voornoemd. In het midden bevindt zich de eerder genoemde ingangspartij, plastisch vormgegeven door uitgemetselde hoekverzwaringen, en een ruim overstekend betonnen dak en een dito luifel boven een dubbel portiek. Aan de linkerkant gaat de hoekverzwaring over in een schoorsteen met vlaggenstok. De luifel rust aan weerszijden op een kraagsteen en in het midden op een muurdam met gebogen dagkanten, en met aan de voorzijde een zware kraagsteen met ingebeiteld jaartal 1927, en daaronder een bronzen halfzuil met lantaarn, en met de voorstelling van een ruiter en - aan de voet - van twee ineengeslagen handen tussen de jaartallen 1886 en 1936. Aan weerszijden leidt een hardstenen stoep van vier treden naar een dubbele, stalen deur. Deze dubbele deur heeft gebogen zijvlakken en in het midden een smalle lichtspleet. Boven de luifel zijn drie stalen zesruits bovenlichten. Boven de vensterreeks van de verdieping staat de naam VERKADE. Direct onder het dakoverstek een reeks van vier liggende stalen zesruits vensters. De uitstekende bovenverdieping heeft rechts een kleine halfronde uitbouw.
De rechter hoek van de noordgevel wordt geaccentueerd door een hoge schoorsteen. Tegen de westgevel bevindt zich hier een kleine éénlaags uitbouw. Het interieur van het trappenhuis is geheel uit de bouwtijd en bevat een gescheiden opgang.
Waardering
Beschuitfabriek van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als goed ontworpen en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van fabrieksarchitectuur uit het Interbellum, in zakelijk-expressionistische trant. Biscuit factory on rectangular plan, consisting largely of two storeys under a flat roof, on the east side partly with a shed roof. The building has on the north side a representative central section serving the stairwell. This central section has three storeys. A single storey under shed roof characterizes the building on the rear (south side) on either side of a two-storey central section (office under a gently sloping gabled roof). The building is executed with plastically formed brick facades, concrete detailing, and rows of broad rectangular steel multi-pane windows. The brickwork is executed in three colours of brick: mainly yellow brick in running bond, with red brick in cross bond the slightly recessed plinth, and purple in the parapet. The full mortar joints are adapted to these colours. The brickwork of the flat facades is partly decorated with projecting and recessed bands. Continuous concrete mouldings directly above the windows mark the floors, the topmost moulding has concrete gutters. Along the base of the windows is a continuous drip moulding of hard-fired tiles. The facade is finished with a toothed concrete cornice, which is interrupted in several places (corner accents) by raised brick chimneys with concrete tops.
On the east facade there is a concrete loading platform under a corresponding canopy with wire glass. To the left of it a small semi-circular extension (toilet facilities) with a rounded concrete roof edge. On the right side of the facade a projection with rounded corners, with in the left inner corner the start of a narrow rectangular, tall chimney. Said platform is fitted with a semi-circular iron bumper rail, which continues around the rounded right corner.
The long north facade has in both storeys a long row of windows as mentioned. In the middle is the aforementioned entrance section, plastically formed by raised brick corner reinforcements, and a widely overhanging concrete roof and a corresponding canopy above a double portico. On the left side the corner reinforcement transitions into a chimney with a flagpole. The canopy rests on either side on a corbel and in the middle on a wall pier with curved edges, and with on the front a heavy corbel with engraved date 1827, and below it a bronze semi-column with lantern, and with the representation of a rider and - at the base - of two clasped hands between the dates 1886 and 1936. On either side a hardstone step of four treads leads to a double steel door. This double door has curved side faces and in the middle a narrow light slit. Above the canopy are three steel six-pane fanlights. Above the window row of the storey is the name VERKADE. Directly under the roof overhang a row of four horizontal steel six-pane windows. The projecting upper storey has on the right a small semi-circular extension.
The right corner of the north facade is accentuated by a tall chimney. Against the west facade here is a small single-storey extension. The interior of the stairwell is entirely from the building period and contains a separate staircase.
